I've had a busy week training for an upcoming fight, but I did manage to get some stuff done. I actually started some bigger stuff, but I'll post when I'm done.
The first two panels are 1'x2', the third piece is medium gray on a white hood, I don't know what happened to the color in the picture.

great work this week....everyone involved should be proud.

last night I went to visit David Kimble. I'm sure you've seen his work, he's been doing astoundingly precise cutaway views of cars, planes, ships and trains for many years.

very sweet guy, very generous with his time. he's got a studio in an old theater in Marfa, Texas, about 60 miles from here. he is an airbrush master and it was a pleasure to talk shop with such a pro.

Nice stuff as usual guys. Hey Dan, Kimble's work is unreal. I am always overwhelmed when I see his stuff. How many hours does he have in an average piece? I'm sure that is asked alot!

Kevin Lee
09-24-2004, 01:07 PM
Dan - Incredible. The gutter punks piece makes me smile and think about the job I had with a friend when we would do similar stuff for customers/friends...I don't do enough of the truly fun stuff anymore.

The cutaway is simply amazing. I've wanted to do a couple of different cutaways - one of my car and I have another in mind... I always wondered how guys like that start a piece and how much stuff they have access to - body off frame shots etc.

Jim,

months of 18-hour days, using a Micron and an Iwata gun shooting goauche. the man's a workaholic. not one stage of the job is computer-aided, either- he despises the things!

one very heartening thing I found is that his studio's as much a cluttered nightmare as mine, plus he's got 2 parrots in there with beaks like Vise-Grips- they'll snap your ear off if you aren't aware.

Just thought I would share.....

D Picasso
09-24-2004, 01:22 PM
Thanks, Grim! it's indeed easy to forget the fun stuff's why one does this kind of work in the first place. it's mandatory.

you ought to see the pile of reference photos Kimble starts with. he showed me a Northstar cutaway and the attendant stack of photos he shot as the engine was assembled at GM, every last damn component. now, I always thought he started with manufacturer-supplied plan drawings and such but the guy's a top-flight engineer on top of being a top-flight illustrator, so that means he starts from scratch every time.

my jaw's all red and rough on the bottom from dragging it around, plus I must have said "remarkable", "astounding" and "amazing" about 500 dozen times.

not only did he know Rex Burnett and Leo Goosen, who did all the drawing for Offenhauser and worked for Miller before that, but also Dutch, Ed Roth, Rob't Williams [with whom he shares a passion for collecting some scary WWll stuff] and darn near every racecar driver from then 'til now.

I have soooooo much to learn....

Great show everyone, that GutterPunks piece is killer!
I've got a couple of contributions this week. First is a '62 Galaxie fender spear (now used as a hood ornament). Flying eyebal done in one shot, the wings can be seen on the spear in the background. That's a quarter beside the eyeball for size comparison.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v136/thrasherbill/My%20Stripes/DCP_0461.jpg

Second is a stool my wife uses in her art room but constantly complained about it not being padded. Solution - 2" foam and a 2-tone tuck and roll.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v136/thrasherbill/My%20Stripes/DCP_0449.jpg

Last one for today, some stripes on my plastic toolbox

Hey Geoff, I'm still working on those multi thickness lines, but it's got me licked how you do em. And those patterns, you must drive your local shrink nuts. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Was down your way during the week, appears you guys have had some wet weather. Called in to Datsfa's place just in time to see the result of his big concrete water tank bursting at the seams and trying to drown the Caddy. Man what a mess.

Thanx, I appreciate the encouragement.

Still not too sure about those two pieces. I think the idea is sound, but the execution could be better. Dunno if it was the choice of colours or whaat. I prefer the second one where I tried to stripe in the spaces around the car pics and where I went over the cars I tried to make the lines flow with the lines of that particular photo. Thinking maybe I should rub them both out and do them over, using strongre colours.. Practice makes perfect, or whatever it was my old man tried to teach me. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Multi thickness lines. Which one's do you mean?
Yeah has been a little wet here. datsfa?

What I mean is how you get one fat line, then next to it a skinnier one and then a really skinny one. I can do aall thicknesses but it's usually all in the one line, if yya know what I mean.

I'm with ya on the shrink deal, there's a few I know for sure would love to get me on the couch. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Thick lines, thin lines in between lines. Side by side, over and under. I don't know I just do it. Can't let you in on all my hidden secrets. See all those times you were looking over my shoulder with that camera, Mr Carps. You should have been paying attention. A lot to be learnt in this world from paying attention! Yes K&R. On the roadster chassis, modified. Roadster hood, narrowed at rear with a pie cut, because the coupe body is narrower than the roadster body. Hood sides made from aluminium. Along with a lot of other mods. Hand made aluminiun I-beam ( should do a tech on that one day! ). I am really pleased how this one turned out.
Yeah diecast is a challenging medium to work in.
Glad you like the coupe model, K&R Geoff aka Whodaky

It's a ceremonial rattle made from a turtle shell I bought at a Pow Wow. The handle is a Bison rib bone. The holes are closed up with deer hide and it has dried beans inside. That's Bison wool tied onto the handle........
