Would I get dis-owned??? How have you hooked up your HEI? I have tried one to see if it'd fit and I have no problem. Was wondering so I don't fry any wires.

Tho not trad- they are super reliable and will make a hotter spark to help your motor run better -so Id do it...... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
It is a drop in and you'll need to replace the stock distributor lead from the switch as it is too small a wire.
You should have it replaced with a 10 ga wire.
If you dont you might get by for a while -but it could cause it to heat up [and burn it into] if not replaced.[dont ask how I know this] http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
also you will take off the porcelin Ballast resistor the stock coil took and save it for a restorer..

Hell, I'll take the ballast resistor, there getting hard to find.

If you want HEI power but a trad dizzie, look up Dave's Small-bodied HEI's.

HEI isn't the big deal to me, just wanting to get away from points...

I once had a car with the both coil (points dist) and the starter solenoid running through the resister. I'm thinking the solenoid needed the full voltage and it was wired wrong. Am I right?

Also, 99.9% of HEI's are from cars with EGR and so have about twice as much vac advance as you need, giving you lots of pinging at part throttle usually.
Scrounge a vac can with somewhere around 10-12 degrees instead of 20 (numbers are on bracket of can) from a heavy truck with no EGR at the junkyard or get an aftermarket one.

Thats the ballast by-pass wire that comes from the
starter"I",terminal,it lets the coil get full 12 volts
for starting then drops out and power is cut to about
8 volts for running

You could save some bucks and get a used HEI distributor from a local wrecking yard from any small block chevy engine. I swapped the one out in my 67 and ran a new 10 ga wire from the "unfused" spot on my fuse box right to the HEI. Now I hit the pedal once, turn the key and she fires right NOW. No whirling over like it did with points. Was a worth while upgrade

So if you have a 12V hot wire to directly to the HEI, and you remove the resistor, do you then get rid of the wire from the starter? I think you shouldn't hook that wire in with the hot wire just cut it out, right?

that's right, you no longer need that wire. Do away with it.

HEI= http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif No problems! I changed all mine over and have since not been left stranded in a parking lot with a hateful ass bitc... oh nevermind.

Get an aftermarket adjustable one, basically like a Ford. You stick an allen screw in the hole to adjust.
I love those big clunkers and plan to use A DUI version on my 390 ford

Speaking of HEI, anyone have one lying around they are willing to give up?

You will need to make sure power does not drop out on our new feed while cranking or you will need the second one. Check with a volt meter. Otherwise the car won't fire until just when you relase the key to stop cranking. It will still start sometimes as the engine is still spinning down when the HEI is fired up.
