View Full Version : Harleys? and HOTRODS! Phuc em.......a Sturgis hotrod event?

Tman

All this talk af gay rodruns and trailered Harleys got me thinking. Actually I have been thinking of this for several years. You see, I live in Rapid City, about 27 miles from Sturgis South Dakota. We get about a half a million here in August to play like Brando on their bikes. I always thought there was a good tie in with hotrods, the roads are crowded but there is cool shit to look at and make fun of!!! I propose a HAMB BBQ on the first weekend of the Sturgis Rally(usually the first weekend in Aug) with a nice cruise through the Black Hills. There is plenty to do in Sturgis, I have a place to let everyone CAMP!!!(yeah camp, hotels are cool but comradierie is better in a tent) and we could have some fun.

Input????

Naw Unk...It would just be another BBQ by me http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I think the idea would work, Sturgis is a cool place to see and the bikers dig hotrods. We could have lots of fun with this.

Excellent idea, and closer than 2000 miles away for some of us! I'd be sure to make the trip with my sled up there. Camping in Custer State park is fun...just don't harass the buffalo, they make big f*cking dents in street rods.

Lulabelle, BTTF is June 18th-20th next year. Are you planning on attending? I've got my room already at a Stupid 8 and can pass the motel info onto you if you'd like.

As far as the Black Hills go, it's some of my most favorite cruzn areas. Was there with Big Olds during the bike rally last year and had nothing but thumbs up from all the bikers. Unfortunantly that first weekend in Aug next year is not good for me so I won't be attending. I'll keep my eye on the thread and if my plans should change, you can count me in. Sounds like a blast!

i was in sturgis this year with my 40. we were there a week before the "event" started. had dinner at the erma. and checked out a couple other spots as well. really cool place. I'd love to be there during bike week.. with a bike.. if this happens I'd also try to attend..but like denise the first week of august isnt the best time for me.. are you sure that the rally is the first week of aug??

I think that's a fantastic idea.. I would support it 100% I can't think of anything better than tons of bikes AND cars.. now the CAMPING.. hmmm.. do tents have A/C?

trey
10-17-2003, 08:57 AM
i would love to do it tman. but you are running close to speedweek. i have a hard enough time getting of work as it is. i have a lot of stuff going on then, and that would probably mean i have to take off 45+ days. if i didnt have to do something at the end of aug, we could do sturgis, then head to bonneville.

ok you pulled my leg. maybe ill skip speedweek AGAIN this year, and just go next time. there is another kid here in wyoming. cant remember the name though. i could probably bring two others with me, but ill have to ask them that. they are big speedweek guys. i say we try it!

Tents with A/C?? Whaaaa ha ha ha! I'd be more worried about having a heater up there sometimes. I say we get this going, I'd attend every year for sure. Hot Rods, BEER and Camping....an event like that can't go wrong...even if it hails all weekend. Yea, Tman, you missed my intro, look a month or two back.

T...dude your on. Car may not be done but I got one of them fat apehangered, tank shifted murder-sickles of 1975 vintage! My buddy belongs to the "Hamsters" so this is a mandatory run for him and he is just startin' to get into rods. It's funny seeing a dude w a $40g bike drooling over the lump I'm building in my one car garage.

I usually stay at the Fish & Fry by Lead, SD so a change of faces and places would be way cool. I'd like to see what that Tri-power set up is going into!

Yeah...don't piss of the Buffalo or them Mule/Burrow/Jackass things either. Had 3 of chase me on my bike when I slowed down 'cuz they were in the road. Kinda like that Saturn commercial! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Tman

Ahhhh FishNFry! I stayed there as a kid on vacation back in the 70s. As for the tripower you can take a ride with it by then. Usually the trafffic is not too bad the first weekend. If only 3 or 4 HAMBers show, it will be a success.

Rocky
10-18-2003, 12:19 AM
So, when is Speedweek next year? If it's the first weekend in August, I said I'd go there next year. I wanna see Mikey Bishop thrash the flathead engines I sold him in a record attempt on the briney salt....

Trent-my wifes old college roomate runs the campground across from the Sturgis Dragstrip, let me know, maybe we could work some kinda hookup here???

Dan
10-18-2003, 03:01 AM
and...for everyone who talks shit about Sturgis "selling out" sure there are RUBS but there is still TONS of cool stuff to see and do, you just have to pick your crowd. I know of which I speak as I lived in Spearfish (very close to Sturgis) my wife is from Whitewood (VERY close to Sturgis) and her Grandpa for many years owned a hotel in Deadwood (again, a destination spot from Sturgis) I would really like to see this happen (although right in the middle in of my very busy fire season) Kinda our version of the HCPP or various other show that those of us here are a great distance from??? Sorry for the poor grammar, Jesse's FIRST birthday, Drunk!!!!

Jims too busy buying up projects to play with us.

Dan, would you be able to look into that campground for us? It sounds like the best deal yet. And if it works like last year, there were car drags across the road on the first weekend.I would think we would only take up room for 10-12 cars and the owners tents. A lot LESS than a motorhome and a 40 foot trailor http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

And Dan is right, there are lots of cool things going on.

atch
10-20-2003, 08:53 PM
i'll be watching this, as i might be interested. there's a possibility of drivin' clarence with a bsa chopper on a trailer. that work? actually clarence will always be able to make it. i could also being either harley on a trailer. or ride either harley, for that matter (wouldn't want to be confused with the rubs that motor home it to sturgis). the real trick will be to make the bsa run, even if only semi-safely.

that way i could scoot over to sturgis one day and do the obligatory hour long ride down the 3 blocks of main street. maybe even cruise out to glenco or buffalo chip for an evening of "female entertainment."

Tman
10-20-2003, 09:04 PM
atch, if Dan can get us hooked up with that campground we will be across the road from Glencoe!

The dates of our HAMBash are Aug 7th and 8th of 2004. I will keep you guys posted as the time draws near.

Hey T-man not much on camping, but if I bring the mod I would have to haul it (me the wife and a tooth-brush and it's full) so maybe get a camper for the pick-up. The hills are the best and duing bike week there is lots to see. Keep me posted.

Dan
10-22-2003, 10:04 AM
Trent-I'll talk to the wife and maybe she can talk to her friend, if not I'll pursue it alittle bit. If that doesn't work out there is also that new place in Whitewood that has all that covered parking - that might be interesting to some??

hotrodladycrusr
10-22-2003, 10:38 AM
I stayed right next door to Glencoe last year. Only a ditch and fence seperated us. What a zoo. Traffic in that area SUCKS the big wad. To get from Main Street back to the campground anytime from early evening till dark took over an hour for just a couple of miles (everyone trying to get to the Full Throttle which is right across the paved street from Glencoe). Had to pull Big Olds over to the side of the road a number of times cuz he was getting to hot.

What happened to camping in your yard? Anyplace but Sturgis proper.

My other plans are for the weekend prior to this, so this might be a go for me and Big Olds.

FYI: For those considering this and/or B'ville, Speed Week starts Aug 13th/14th for 2004

(thought to myself... wonder if my boss will give the whole month of Aug off???? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif )

Dan
10-22-2003, 10:54 AM
Ditch - fence - zoo, sounds like camping to me!
It takes hours to get anywhere to anywhere during the rally, just have to accept that. Camping in peoples yard is fine if you find anyone who will let you do it for anything less than a huge pile of money. Spearfish has a very cool campground too that might be a good option. Whether you stay in Sturgis, Whitewood, Spearfish, Deadwood doesn't matter too much as most people will be traveling around the hills to see the different events.
In my opinion, the campground across from the dragstrip would be best (it is not Glencoe, I forget the name, only been there a couple of years, but it is nice - good shade trees, camping cabins and a small pavillion) because it is close to downton, dragstrip, Buffalo Chip and Full Throttle (good places for live music)

Denise, nothing is set in stone, we will figure out a cool venue. My place right now is REALLY small. Dan knows, he has been here. I have several ideas going. Dont worry, we will have a cool place to stay. The campground Dan speaks of is around the corner from Glencoe towards Bear Butte. I also have some options up in the hills.Mosst hotels are already booked so camping is the easiest. Whatever happens we will have a fun time. Keep you all posted.T

hotrodladycrusr
10-22-2003, 11:59 AM
Not that my vote counts BUT staying in/around Spearfish or Deadwood is much more appealing to me . I was never in bummer to bummer traffic in any of the other towns, just Sturgis. Crowded yes, bummer to bummer traffic, nope.

While cruzn around in the Black Hills for 7 days, I went by lots of very cool looking mom and pops campground places that I commented to myself, that would be a neat place to stay next time. Of course, I can't remember any of the names http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

MilesM
10-22-2003, 12:14 PM
I might have to wander through. I usually make it up north a couple times each summer. The bikers love cool cars. I am not a big bike fan but I have ran through there many times around and during the event and always get thumbs up. The week before and after there are bikes (and of course RV's and bike trailers) all over the prairie.

Tman
10-22-2003, 02:41 PM
Talked to a customer today that offered up his place to host the event. He is 5 miles southeast of Sturgis on a nice paved country road. Sounds perfect. I will keep you posted.

Dan
10-22-2003, 03:36 PM
Trent-
Haven't been able to track down Kamette (gal who runs the campground) so if that guy is gonna offer his place that does indeed sound perfect.
Something maybe to keep in mind - probably don't wanna hang any big banners or signs around the spot that are red and white and say H.A.m.b. Some people may misunderstand and it would make for a long weekend of constantly explaining who and what we are?? Something to think about??

hotrodladycrusr
10-22-2003, 03:49 PM
I agree with Dan. In fact, I was told by quite a few "biker" friends not to even wear red while there. Not worth the trouble.

Tman
10-22-2003, 09:51 PM
YEah whatever........not wear red pfffft! I wore my RED AND BLACK HAMB shirts every time I went to Sturgis last year.

This guy is a rodder and pretty cool. His place is a couple minutes off the interstate at Elk Creek. He jumped on the idea. His place is a small ranch with plenty o grass and gravel. And like I said, is is on a paved road. I have one other place that is more like heaven, but for now this looks good. I am already planning the Reliability Run Route. I think lunch will be at Boondocks or the Moonshine Gulch Saloon. Get ready for a cool cruise, one you really DRIVE your car!

atch
10-23-2003, 12:30 AM
i can see that this thread it taking shape, and it sounds like east of downtown is already being ruled out. however, (and this is ONLY my opinion) last year when i stayed at the buffalo chip campground i swore i'd never set foot east of downtown again during the rally. an hour or more to go 3 miles was just ridiculous. they were making sounds about making it 4 lane, but don't know if it ever happened.

i have friends who stayed a couple of years ago at a campground somewhere in the neighborhood you're talking about (a few miles southeast of sturgis, and a little ways down a gravel road). they loved it.

Tman
10-23-2003, 12:37 AM
They did change the road (Hwy 34) East of Sturgis to accomodate more traffic but there are now more people going that direction due to the bars and concerts. This place I found is straight south on the interstate between Sturgis and Rapid City. We will be fine getting in and out of town this way. Sturgis is also looking at opening the City Park back up for daytime parking, this should help congestion.

On another note, what DO YOU folks want to do/see? I am open to ideas. I grew up here and happen to know some neat out of the way places but things like Mt Rushmore are not in my mind as a stop.

DrDano
10-23-2003, 12:43 AM
Watching Hummers get stuck in the tunnels on the needles hwy is always fun...he he. There is the hot springs. Rushmore is cool to drive past but getting way too expensive to even park there.

For those who may be up for it, there could always be a short day cruise over to Devil's Tower, or raising hell at night at Sandy Beach/Red Cove at Glendo.

Just ideas and my $0.02

TomH
10-23-2003, 09:49 AM
Trent, ya think Gene will let us stop by the shop and see the projects he got going? I think most of the guys and gals would enjoy that. I agree skip the faces, you can see what you need to see from the road. Also what about Dean's place, it's a nice drive up there and you can spend a couple hours easy looking at his stuff.

Dan
10-23-2003, 10:01 AM
Boondocks is kinda touristy / chessey but I like going there. When I go I like to take in the vendors, concerts, etc. but I am outside all the time so I don't neccasarily need to see the "Hills" during that time. There really is some beautiful scenery around for those that enjoy that sorta thing. I guess what I am trying to say is that for my vacations I like to do car / motorcycle stuff, my job puts me in the Hills!

Sounds like the possible spot is near the Elk Creek Steakhouse?? That could be convenient...

Tman
10-23-2003, 10:48 AM
Yes, it is right down the road from the steakhouse. But, I had a horrible meal the last time there, others have said the same.

Tom, if we do lunch at Moonshine Gulch, Deans place is only 2 miles away! He should have his raodster going by then so I assume he will come with us. Deans place will BLOW you away!

As for a stop at A&A, we can do that as well. Maybe a stop on Friday as folks roll in? I dunno?

Curly
10-23-2003, 12:04 PM
I got my first taste of snowflakes this morning and all this talk about SD in August is getting me all sorts of confused! Almost went out and got the mail in my shorts! Its so early in the season that the snow melts before it hits the ground and I've already started the Sturgis fund!

The wife was never into the bike scene and I left riding with a club a few years before I met her. She needs to "Go West". I think everyone should see the Black Hills...especially a 100 + mph run to the little Indian bar (the one w/ all the antlers mounted on it) in the Badlands for a semi-cold one and then just cruising!

Anyone going out there w/ Apehangers watch out for Kennebec. Trooper chased me down cuz he saw my bars were too high from the other side of the I90!

Don't forget to stop at Wall Drug! Maybe a hookup spot to caravan into the hills? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Tman
10-23-2003, 07:49 PM
I know we are months away, but all this talk got me thinking of the plan. It sounds like everyone is on the same page, ie: no $8 parking at Mt Rushmore.

I will plan a shop open house Friday afternoon for early arrivals, then a caravan to the campsite. We can hit Sturgis that night for a little atmosphere, I am going to talk to a bar owner I know about a dedicated HAMB parking area.

Saturday will be a tour of the hills, hopefully a tour of Deanos(worth the trip alone, he carves his own blocks out of that pesky billet crap http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif). This willl ba a long day, we will try to hit a bunch of the hills. I plan on having some BBQ precooked and ready to finish off for Saturday Eve. I am thinking of a side of Pork? Or Buffalo?

Sunday might be your choice, Southern Hills, or Devils Tower. I will keep this open and up to a vote of those that are there.

MOTORCYCLES ARE WELCOME, I want to see Ray on his Trump! Dan, rod or Ironhead?

Like I said, this will be low key. What I just outlined is the depth of our planning. So to recap, Come to the hills, look at Harleys, drive your hotrod, eat.

ray
10-24-2003, 04:45 AM
i'll try to be there with bike in tow of either the car or truck whichever is up to it by then...

and i tell ya, under "normal" circumstances i would have NO problem with the HAMB/HAMC thing, but recent personal dealings with "other" mc clubs, tell me for this few days it would not be a bad idea to avert attention from any coincidences. it wasn't too long ago i didn't much give a fuck. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif funny how reality can affect nice little theories.

hotrodladycrusr
10-24-2003, 08:07 AM
Sounds like a cool plan. Just fyi for those that might want to head to Mt Rushmore at some point in time, be it this trip or another. As your approahing Mt Rushmore on 244 from the Keystone area, just before you get to the main parking lot, the $8 one, there is a driveway on your right that says "Art Center" or Cultural Center", something like that. It is a FREE parking lot. From there it is a short 5 minute walk up a path and it brings you out on the right side of the faces.

Just thought I'd mention it. Everyone likes to save a few dollars. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Unless a huge pile of money falls into my lap and I get a couple months of work I probably would be driving the '30 or '49. Probably gonna be the Ironhead or maybe the '65 (tow the bike behind the '65, might be kinda cool??) That and don't even know if I can get the time off, being on call 24 hours a day during the summer basically sucks-

trent,

for many years now i've gone on at least one (usually 2-3) big trips in clarence each summer. places like bonneville, nsra nats, btt50's, frog follies, colorado mountains, americruise, etc. this year your deal and the hunnert car pileup are the long distance ones i'm trying to make plans to go to.

something clicked for me when you mentioned having this. it just sounds like something i want to be a part of. i love mountains. i love hot rods and driving clarence. i love harleys and riding mine (i got to ride for a couple of hours today; the first time since last fall). i'm hoping to borrow a trailer (i normally don't trailer rods or bikes unless they're broke, which has been really rare, knock on wood) and pull a scoot out there with clarence. rod around the mountains with rodders. ride over to sturgis one day for the obligatory 2 hour 4 block long main street ride. snag a t-shirt. and come home via a scenic route.

actually i was going to respond to your land barron post, but decided to do it here instead. i had to use the search to find this. congrats on the dirt man. hope you get to build your dream house/shop on it.

Thank you very much atch. Both on the land comment and the fact you consider my little unproven BBQ/Reliability run something worthy of a 15 hour drive! I am flattered and will do my best to show you a fun weekend. TomH and his wife Char plus others are also making plans so we will have a few folk at least.

i could be mistaken, but i think hrlc is planning to attend. can't remember others, but i'm sure you'll have plenty of company that day.

and it just wouldn't be an acceptable summer if i didn't have at least one 15 hour day in clarence. based on my harley speedo that clocked 815 miles from here to sturgis, it should be about what, 775 to rapid? that figgers about 15 hours for me, unless there's something worth stoppin' for. and there usually is. maybe pioneer village? i'll plan for two days each way.

Rocky -- The 8CM block you sold me will be the foundation for the new motor for the F-1. Gonna pick it up at Fuller's shop in Sacto next week where I stashed it and the other pieces I picked up in Oregon. It gets the fresh Merc crank and rods I got from Digger Dave in exchange for a carve-and-polish job on his Merc crank. This one won't be a record motor, but it will be a stout stroker motor for the speed-shop F-1. You'll be proud of it, I promise.

Excellent Mike! You mean it won't be a record holder motor YET! You'll prolly run it in the "blue/green flathead F-1" class and kick ass. BTW, I can't attend the T-man gig because I'm going to Boneville and then to the HAMB drags this year instead. Sorry T...just not enough vacation time and $$$$$ to do it all. 'Sides, Mrs Rocky prolly deserves a little of my vacation time....

Sorry Atch and T-Man, I won't be able to attend. I just don't have enough vacation time to stretch my two week B'ville/HAMB Drags adventure longer. I will see you both at MoKan though http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Trent, while this post has your attention, my mother, sister amd nephew will be in your neck of the woods the begining of June checking out those stone face dudes. Could I get you phone number and address just in case they run into any troubles or issues while there. Also, do your have any motels in the Black Hills that you can recommend for them?

I am still planning on making it. Will a tear drop work for camping? Where should we show up on Friday? Rapid City?

I have your shop number but I might want to grab your cell number in case I have any problems on the way up or running behind I still could meet up with you guys wherever you are.

Miles, my cell, . I dont always carry it but will in the days leading up to the event. We will have a small turnout, teardrop is fine, what are you towing with? I ask due to space and parking. It looks like 3 campers, I will have my tent. We are crashing at a pals place in a residential area away from downtown Sturgis enough to relax yet close enough to stroll down and see the sights. It will be a small but fun gathering.

Anyone can call my home number 605-716-5988 and leave a call back number if you need info or directions. I will post a map here with directions to my pal Bruce's house. Lemme know when you folks are hitting the area.

Thanks. It looks like I will be taking the 50 Convert but the 53 wagon is the backup if I do not get everything done.

I will watch for the map post.
