Where can I get 18 gauge sheet steel in Pittsburgh?
East of downtown would be best, but it doesn't matter.

Thanks in advance,

Matt

Ha ha hahaha...

I was thinking the same thing. Pittsburgh should be dripping with steel.

As for where...I dunno?
I'm not that familiar with Pittsburgh. But any metal fabrication place should sell you a sheet or two.
I buy all my steel, here in TN, from a local metal fab place. When you go in there, it ain't like Lowe's. You gotta dodge welding sparks, metal shavings, hunks of machinery...etc.etc plus go and track down the foreman, Mike. Boy he's a little ray of sunshine.

I don't know if this helps you or not. Hope it does...

Hey, is the "O" still open? I think it was over there near Carnegie.
They had the most awesome fries when I used to go up there (jeez, 10 years ago http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif ) Time flies when you're having fun.

Getting automotive grade steel is not easy in Pittsburgh. The only mill (3 total) left that deals in sheetmetal makes commercial grade for stoves and fridges. All the metal we get for stamping out the panels at work come mainly from MI or Canada.

On to Duece Rails' question. There is a place called Mars Metal or something close to that near me. I was told to go there if I ever needed anything. I would assume that they are in Mars which I have yet to find out where it is. I think it is near Monroeville. I will ask my boss tonight and find out where they are.

Welcome to the 21st Century, guys. Most of the mills are now "industrial parks," and most of the workers have moved on or retired.

Thanks, Jason.

VonTingler, the "O" sure is still here. Primanti Bros, too.

Thanks, sawzall. Nice score!

Unless 5 by 10 is in inches, then I'd say you didn't do too well. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I'm sure I'll find something...

Hi Deuce

You could go to Multi-Metals and talk to Wayne out off old Rt. 66 near Delmont. I called him and a 4 x 8 of 18 goes for $45.00. 724-836-2720

I go there or to Jeannette Steel off 130 in Jeannette for most of my materials. Angle, channel, etc. 724-523-5431 They are affiliated with Multi-Metals and refered me to Wayne on the sheet-metal.

Also he will sell you less than a sheet (will cut what you need) and if there is a "drop" laying around he can beat the price as quoted.

These guys built "some" lowering blocks for me several years ago and they were dead on the mark and cost was more than fair.

There is a shop on Rt. 30 near Exit 67 of TP, called Straw-Pump Auto Panels. She had 16 gauge 48 x 50 - $50.00 and 48 x 96 - $60.00... 724-863-9280 (NO 18 gauge to be had there)

I hope that helps.
Bob

I don't know of any steel mills in South Carolina but I don't have a problem finding sheet steel at any of the fab shops or supplys,,,guess we are lucky,,,,must be at least 3 places that stocks it in Anderson.HRP

i might never have to buy sheet steel again. i renovated a school this spring/summer. got like 30 sheets of 18 guage, all 3'x8' or 3'x10'. made the trunk floor in my impala out of it and the lower quarter panels. probably wouldn't be what the pros would look for, but it works, especially for free. just kind of a bitch to get the chalkboard paint off! ha.

The welding supply shop west penn laco in Millvale has 18 Gauge. There also is a place on route eight whose name escapes me right now that sells all kinds of steel. These are both in my end of town The one on route eight just got flooded though as it is in Shaler. I know there is a place in Duquense or Munhull that a guy from the club got a large amount from about a year ago. I could get the name of them next time I see him.

Duece Rails My boss decided to take the next 2 days of work off so I will not see him probibly til Sunday. The place in Jeanette sounds like it might work give them a try. He wouldn't be too far for me. I have another guy I can ask whenever I talk to him again.

For what it's worth, I just found some old notes I took at a Ron Covell workshop at Wyotech Pennsylvania. He (or the guys at Wyotech) recommended Parker Metal Products, 724-224-2472, or www.parkermetalproducts.com. (Although I imagine that they're a lot closer to Blairsville than Pittsburgh.) Has anyone used them?

Matt,
I have never used Parke Metal Products. I have heard of them, they are up in near Tarentum. Like Bob, I use Multi-Metal off of Rt. 66. The last time I bought, I had to use a credit card, and the slip said Latrobe Steel??? I bought a 4' X 8' sheet of 16 gauge for $70, something like that. I work right by there if you need any help in getting during work hours let me know.

Multi-metals is the place and when you go make sure to ask for wanye and tell him you're paying cash, he'll save you money. I believe at parkers you have to buy in quanity.
