One wire Altenator

Working on a 1956 Chevy belair, put a new 350 SBC stroker in runs great, but I'm working on the alternator. Ive been told that I need a rectifier, but every were I look is telling me to connect it directly to the battery. has anyone got any input that could help. Thanks!
