I don't feel that I'm old but there's something about an old country guy that kinda rocks out that gets me going.
I like em all, any favorites?

That guy that sings "I'm watching the belles of southern bell" rocks,
David Alan Coe ROCKS!
(just ignore the rascism, he did that as a joke, I'm told?)
Tennesee Ernie Ford rocks-
('cept he does ALOT of gospel stuff)
Roger Miller's got a few good songs

Gosh... who else?

Oh shit! UNCLE DAVE MACON!
I DARE you t tell me that guy doesn't just RULE!

(damn! I wish I still had all my MP3's)

Hey Paul age has nothing to do with enjoying good ol' honky tonk music! I'm 28 and a big fan of Johnny Horton. Of course my favorite Jonny Horton song is Honky Tonk Man, second is goodbye lonesome (hello babydoll).

Other favorite artists
Carl Perkins
Wayne Hancock
Hank Williams
just to list a few!

For nobody that has heard of Wayne "The Train" Hancock ya'll need to check him out. He's a young fella with that sweet honky tonk sound! His music is what he likes to call Texas Juke Joint Swing, its great stuff, check out his site, him and his band are always on the road.

Pray that crazy hillbilly's sober.

I just got home for the "High Rockabilly Festival" in Spain.
(Don’t ask me why they call it that???, should be the "drunk Rockabilly Fest.").

Any how the biggest surprise of the week for me was hearing Londoner Charlie Thompson. What a voice that cat has!

First time I've seen anybody pull off Marty Robbins tunes at a European "Desperate rock and roll party"

Hey Sean, I talked to Skinny, he said it was a blast. I hear they've got hot wimmin in Spain.

I went to a Kerry/Edwards political rally last night, they weren't selling beer at the arena, so I got drunk beforehand.

I believe the gloves might be coming off.

Wayne Hancock's 6" 3" tall.

All ways dug " the Wild One" and "Coal Smoke, Valve Oil and Steam" Great train song.
"Honkytonk Hardwood Floor" rocks.
Man, are we way OT here or what?

There's a big group of old pickers who got they're barbers licenes while playing with the western swing and honkytonk bands in central Texas.

I get my hair cut by one of them named Red here in Austin who used to go bass fishing with Johnny Horton.

Johnny would always borrow his boat anytime he was in town gigging at Dessau Hall or the Skyline Club.

It's allways fun to sit and listen to they're "to drunk to fish" stories.

If you like that sorta stuff, there is a radio station here, in Ypsilanti, MI, that plays old country. It's an AM station, but they also broadcast on the web.

www.wsds1480.com (http://www.wsds1480.com)

You have do download surfernetwork to listen to the web broadcast, but it is old country 24 hours a day. And good stuff too. But, I did notice this week, that they are broadcasting some oldies in the mix now, like Motown oldies... so beware. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I personally love the old shit. Ask my wife. She slumps down in the car seat when we are driving cause she thinks I am the only under 30 year old in the world that listens to AM radio.

There's just something about an old Ernest Tubbs song...

Johnny Horton was killed on an overpass about 6 miles from where I sit right now. Old overpass replaced years ago, but I go over it every day. I was a kid, can't remember what year he died. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

November 5, 1960.

He was headed to Rockdale to do some fishing after a show at the Skyline club in Austin.
Guy who hit him was drunk.

I remember reading about him before. If you read through his story it is pretty spooky. He was married to Hank Williams widowed wife. The last place that both of them played was the Skyline in Austin. Both died in cars. To top it off, Horton was telling everybody that he knew he was going to be killed by a drunk. I don't think he knew how exactly, but alcohol was going to be involved. He didn't even want to play his last gig because he was scared. He didn't want to stay in the bar when he was done with the gig because he thought he was going to die that night. They left and the rest is history.

If you like old hillbilly tunes then pick up a box set called "Hillbilly Boogie". Its got some hopped-up hillbilly numbers on it and even a few by Bill Haley BEFORE the Comets. He used to be in a band called the Saddlemen. One of my personal favorites in this set is "Hot Rod Boogie" by Tillman Franks with Faron Young on vocals...it's waaaay gone! The box set is pretty cheap considering its got 4 discs. I picked mine up at a Borders Book Store for under $30. This box set goes great with frosty beverages in the garage!

See y'all down the road!

Adios,

Well, I think that if youy like Johnny Horton while you are having a cold one, you should probably like Carl Butler. It's fairly hard to find anything he has done but, look hard and, if you do find a casette (nothing on CD that I know of, pop a cold one and enjoy.
Of course you could always weenie out and just go for Jerry Lee Lewis before he was a rocker. Well, he was always a rocker, but he was a country dude first. Lots os neat wailing peddle steel stuff and Jerry Lee just blasting away on the pee-ano.
And then there is Ray Price and, well-shit, I think I'm gonna just pop a cold one and enjoy some of my own advice...
