As some of you know, I recently put a mustang T-5 in my stude. I've been told a billion different thigs about which oil to use in it. The guy I got it from said that he never puts ATF in them, and refers to it as RED DEATH. He said to use a 10w, synthetic moly gear oil. Others I've talked to have suggested synthetic motor oil, amsoil ATF, syncromesh and other stuff. Right now, I'm running Red Line synthetic ATF.
Several people have told me that ATF, synthetic or petroleum based, doesn't provide enough protection for the bearings and such. On the other hand, people have told me that non-ATF oils will ruin the synchros.
Aren't the internals of a world class T-5 the same, regardless of the type of car it came in (chevy, ford, jeep, ect.)? If that is true, then couldn't I run syncromesh or any other type of non-ATF oil?
I'm just really confused....any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Jake

Did you try a Ford Motorsport board or calling a Ford dealer?

You get your E-Bay situation fixed?

My world-class '93 S-10 tranny called for ATF and the previous owner used ATF in it for 238,000 miles. I replaced a flaking input bearing, refilled it with ATF and reused the tranny behind a flathead with no problems. I'd be inclined to use what the manufacturer called for.

ATF - the Redline Synthetic ATF is one of the best. Don't worry.

Even the non-world class can use ATF - the switch to ATF was made as much for shift "feel" as anything else. The fact it occured when the WC model came out is primarily coincidence. There is no difference in the gears or bearings - mostly the blocker rings.

I've seen late-model Mustang T5s behind high HP engines abused - they'll physically break before the ATF fails or lets them down.

ATF. Run it.

thanks for the help guys...I trust most opinions here, especially when they concur....
Flat Ernie...what's the blocker ring? I was into this tranny several times, put syncros in it and such...this one is cool cause it has a tapered roller on the inside of the mainshaft instead of the loose needle bearings..

Thanks

Synchro ring = blocker ring.

I run synthetic ATF in my '94 Cobra. I beat the livin' piss out of it and she holds...

I always used synthetic ATF in my t-5 after the 1st oil change. Lasted alot longer that regular ATF. Seemed to shift better longer with the synthetic.

Also, the world class T5 has a phosphate coated gearset and a lower first gear ratio. (At least the ones in '94 and '95 Cobras do)

this is one of the tremec t-5's that ford motorsports sells. It has a deeper first, and a higher overdrive than most. What I was getting at with the question about internals was this...one guy told me that any non-ATF would ruin the backing (carbon fiber?) on the synchros. However, don't the gm ones have the same synchros? Don't the chevy ones also use synchromesh? Anyhow, I think I'll stick with the Redline ATF, sounds like it works for most of you....

I think you use regular gear oil in T-10's. The T-5, T-45 and other modern manuals use atf

My 90 Chevy has a MG5 and called for sycromesh. I heard it was about $9.00 a quart and had to go to the dealership.

I was at Oreilys and just asked them if they had any. They had penzoil for about $4.00 and it was kept in the back. I asked why it was'nt out and they said their shelf layout plans did'nt show a space for it so it's in the back. I thought that was kinda weird.

Just thought I tell a story about syncromesh which has nothing to do with your T-5. Story might help someone looking for some on the cheap.
