What's the easiest way to get a snapped bolt out of a block? The bolt in question is a timming cover bolt with about a quarter inch sticking out of the block. I know there are a million ways to do this, and I was just curious what other people do. I usually drill them out but I figured this would be a good time to find an easier way.

If you can, slip a nut over the exposed stub, tack weld, with a mig. The heat also helps loosen it. Loosen the nut, there you go! Sparky

With a 1/4 inch of bolt vice grips and pbblaster usually work for me.

Heat the area around the bolt with a butane torch. Clamp with vice grips, and keep trying.

Heating the area around the block is most important. Try it more than once if at first it doesn't work.

If the heat doesn't get it, time for a drill and easy out. Even with the drill and easy out, use heat.

Dude we had a bunch of busted bolts in my flathead.... we hit it with a torch...the bolt itself....until red....then shot it with some PB Blaster....some vicegrips and they all came right out....we only had to heat one twice....It works.

So what do you do if you snap off a main cap bolt 3/4" below the machined surface?

For a bolt that sticks out a little I weld on a washer of the correct size and then weld a nut to the washer. Doing it that way you can get a real good weld onto the broken bolt...also the heat from the welding tends to loosen the bolt so it's easy to remove. Hasn't failed yet!

I've never had consistent luck trying to weld a nut directly to the broken bolt unless the bolt is almost all the way thru the nut. The weld is just too crappy if the bolt is small and deep inside the nut. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
