I bought another 4dr Mercury, it is a 1950 4dr Chop top, Channeld over a late model frame. (Pics and more info about the Merc later) Any way the owner says that the property has Copper Head snakes. I'm not real excited about playing find the snake when I start working on the Merc. How do I get ride of the snakes without removing them by hand? Any suggestions?

Make lots of noise?

Wait, are you talking about more than just getting the car out of there?

I think you would have to try pretty hard to get bitten by a snake - if you even end up seeing one. They generally want to just leave and not be bothered with killing paraniod people. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Be careful though. You know if you look a snake in the eyes it can hypnotize you right? And don't ever run away from one down a hill - they can grab their tails in their mouths to form a hoop shape and just roll after you...you'll never get away. Good luck buddy.

pay a cheap lawn guy 10 bucks....??

What you could do is call the animal care force in your area... I think they will remove them for you...

I was told that male Timber Rattlers will drive away Copper Heads. Be carefull checking out the rattlers. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

copper heads aren't very aggresive, most bites occur when people step on them or startle them. if ok is anything like arkansas there are copperheads and rattlers everywhere, you just don't see them. on a car thats been sitting outside for awhile you are more likely to get spider bit than snake bit.

Which snake is territorial, is it the cotton mouth or the copper head. Which ever one it is will protect its turf.

Many years ago I purchased a front end off an old farmer and while I was un-bolting the parts he has a garden hoe keeping the snake that though the underside of the car was his property away from me. It was a weird feeling lying on my back under the car spinning off bolts and looking towards the trunk area where the farmer was keeping the snake busy.

AND I HATE SNAKES!

OK dude, before all the Helpful Heloise's on here get you snake and spider bit LOL:

Wear your heavy leather welding gauntlets. They are hard for the fangs to penetrate and even if they do, they might not get a decent grip to inject you.

Wear your leather cowboy or engineer boots while picking up the car, they will do the same things for the legs.

Make plenty of noise in the surrounding grass while picking up the car to give the snakes a chance to hit the trail. Because Grim is right. They like you less than you like them.

Finally, bang around on the sheetmetal when you get it home and as you're taking it apart. That oughta roust'em out if there are any.

Take care,

Big Daddy Eric

The 12 ga. is always a good idea. I've always heard pigs eat snakes so take a hog with you http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Seriously I would wait until it gets good and cold to get the car if at all possible. Snakes don't like cold weather being cold blooded and all.

Copperheads like places that provide cover, brushpiles and old cars fit in this category. Just look it over good before you climb under there. Move stuff that might provide a hide under it. If you do find one, you can move it with a hoe or rake and it'll find someplace else to hide.

Noise won't work, snakes can't hear. Stomping your feet or banging on things will give off vibrations they can feel tho, and may get them to move off.

By the time you jostle it around loading it and bang it down the road to your house THEN use an air chisel on it a while -YOU SHOULD BE FINE! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
agood bath of water soap and bleach will remove the mouse smells- thats what the snake was really there for>>>>>>>>>>> http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Why hasn't anybody brought up a mongoose. Really, what you need is a mongoose.
If you weren't so far away, I would loan you mine...

We found a killer junkyard in Arkansas last year in the early spring. I called my dad and was telling him how solid the cars were. I grabbed hold of a quarter panel and was shaking a car proving my point to him (over the phone of course) and he yells at me, Don't put your hand under the car! I was nervous the whole rest of the day! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

A buddy of mine drug home a '48 Caddy It was on a trailer for a good three hours. The next day he started cleaning out the interior and a two foot copper head fell out from under the dash. Needless to say after he stopped running he grab'd a shovel and took care of the snake. Fortunately it was late fall and it was cold that morning so the snake wasn't moving to fast.

A Mongoose would be a kool idea, I have the next best thing a couple of cats. I'm just looking for a quicker plan, that dosn't involve me screaming.

Thanks for all of the help!!

Happy Trails,

Mick

You do realize that you're higher up on the food chain, right?

There is a reason for that...

Unless, of course, you're just scared http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Types of Venom

Thrombase - causes local thrombosis, the coagulation of blood in the blood vessels at the site of the bite.

Anticoagulin - thins the blood.

Hemorrhagin - causes lysis (breaking down) of cells in the capillaries causing hemorrhaging in skin and mucous membranes. If hemorrhagin reaches the capillaries of the brain, the small hemorrhages can cause convulsions.

Neurotoxin - produces a paralytic effect on the respiratory center and the cranial nerves.

All poisonous snakes in Oklahoma produce mostly hemotoxic venom, a combination of the first three chemicals in the above list. Each species produces these chemicals in slightly different amounts.

Have a big CO2 fire extinguisher handy with a helper running it CO2 gets cold when it is sprayed and that should slow a snake down to allow you to get away also have a square headed shovel handy to chop off the snake's head when it is dead skin the bastard and make a steering wheel cover outta the skin.

Hope you don't come in contact with any snakes....yuck lol...spiders and snakes suck! My friend went down to Arizona visiting a friend and while there went to check out a junkyard. While there they asked one of the mexican fellas working there what to do if they hear a rattle in or around... his response was "I go to another car"...good times, good times.

Copperheads and rattlesnakes are a big problem down at my dads place in WV. Use insect smoke bombs in the trunk and close the windows off if possible.
The ones that maybe in the frame or under the hood, use Black Flagg Wasp spray and watch for them and wear good leather gloves.
Copperheads will not kill you but will make you feel like your dying, rattlesnakes can KILL.

Damn. I thought I had found a discussion of Federal Mogul copper cylinder heads for flatheads.
Zoology's interesting, too, though...
I brought home a big rattlesnake hide I found back when I lived in Colombia. As soon as I came through the front door, our pet Coati Mundi got a really strange primal killer expression on her face, and I fortunately had the wisdom to drop my prize and back up...the Coati tore that thing to ribbons and ate every bit of it, including the rattles, in about thirty seconds. Coatis are easier to get than mongeese, and are smart enough to swing a wrench--maybe this is the perfect junkyard pet? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

So did I, Bruce.

So you had a coati mundi? That's too funny. I have a hilarious story that won't work well via typed/email/message/etc - too bad. At least I know what they are...

Never heard of one in the states though...so if you can't get a coati or a mongoose, what about a ferrett?? They're kinda like mongoosees (mongeese?), right? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Back to the subject at hand - it's just a fuckin' snake! Find it, kill it, eat it. It's a poor cousin to the water moccasin...no big deal.

I have no (known) phobias, so I think other people's phobias are hilarious. I'm masochistic that way...the more scared you are of something, the harder I laugh when I drop one on your head! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

There isn't much meat on a copperhead, they're pretty small.
Good extra flavoring in a crawdad gumbo tho. Just remember to pull out the bones. They don't soften up when you cook them like fish bones do. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

That's hilarious, Bruce!

I know that this is a ricer picture, and that it's not a copper head, but it's a good picture just the same:

Yeah - not much meat on any of the pit vipers. Ate some rattlesnake jerky out in the desert a few years back - from the time we killed it, skinned it, poured a little pepper & tobasco from our MREs on it, & strung it up to dry until eating was about an hour - desert is pretty dry! But it was tasty!

Mick take a horny boy and girl snake with you.
Place one on each side of the car, then you will know what sex the snake in your ol Merc is.

Or take a six pak of snake beer with you, when the snake has finished the 6 pak, call the snake police and have him arrested for public intoxication.
I think it is unlawful for snakes to drink in public in Oklahoma. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
