I have decided to use a dropped I beam axle under the 32 truck instead of shipping the original off to have it dropped,,,,,,

I'm keeping the fenders on and plan on a 4" drop.

What is the right size axle for this set up?

I've seen 46",47",47 3/4",and 48........Hell, I'm http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gifHRP

it depends on the size tire , the size and offset of the wheels you want to use..and the brakes....disc's are wider than old ford drums

i'd sugest mocking up the wheel/tires.. put them under the fenders where you want them..mock up the brakes/spindles ...then measure the kingpin centers

The stock width of the axle is 51 3/4",,,,,,,,I plan to use 40 ford rims and brakes,,,The truck already has the correct spindles.

The 32's used a wide beam axle.

Chassis Engineering's wide beam forged 47" wide,
4" drop axle is the way to go.

If you change the width of your axle, your spring must be replaced. The different length axles have the metal taken out of the center of the axle. The Chassis Engr. axle is 2" narrow and takes a 29 1/2" spring. The stock spring is 31 1/2". I would buy a Super Bell I beam cast or a tube axle if you are not going to split the rods. Good luck.

The Superbell beam axle...46 1/2"
The Superbell tube axle...46 1/2"

These two axles also require a narrow spring.
29" is recommended from Superbell.

The old stock spring can only be used if
you drop the stock axle.

im building a 32 tudor and its gonna be full fendered and as low as possible, i went with a axle from speedway (which is a sper bell axle) part number 702-2852, 46 inche kingpin c to c and spring perch width of 34 3/8, then i chose the 2 inch below stock front spring that is recomended for that axle part number 580-1005L, i am also using 48 dord spindle and 40 ford brakes with 56 ford f100 rims 15 by 6.

obviosly i have acces to dropped axles for less than what i paid for the new one but i dont want the tires rubbin on the edge of the fenders so chose to go with the narrow axle.

I am using the same spring 1005L on a tube axle but I have to use the batwings that get welded to the tube axle. Would the 34 3/8 spring perch dimension you state be the same for this set up? I am assuming that the dimension is from the center of the perch hole mount to center of perch hole mount?

CE, makes the best on the market, Forged steel also the right with for a 32 with fenders..I can drop your axle with or without exchange.....

ce and so-cal speed shop axles are 47" and are forged not cast.

the last time i checked, ce was out of beam axles, but so-cal was not.

with running a narrow wheel and tire i like a 47" axle.

plus so- cal's axles have a nicer finish. no ground off forge marks to fix.

Another plus to the S0-Cal axle is with hairpins you can use stock 37/41 roundback spindles and they will turn stop to stop without heating the arms. If using the CE axle the spindles will not turn as short.

Hotrodprimer, thats a gorgeous truck.
Do you get any bumpsteer? My driverside spindle arm is bent all the way down but once in a while I get bumpsteer from a real bad bump and I am thinking of shortening my pitman arm to get the draglink closer to parallel. Do you have any advice?

Not sure of a 32, but on a 40 (different fenders) you have to narrow the axle too or you can't turn it.......ask my brother.

So... what did he end up using?

So... what did he end up using?

At the time he put the old spring back in until he could get the right info...not sure if he resolved it or not, as a matter of fact I am supposed to see him today and I will ask what the outcome was.

If those axles were so good, why'd everybody drop 'em?
