Sedan as Cool
Usually, the grandfathermobile sedans don't engender
the passions of most hot rodders. My aim was to change that; if just a little.
I started out with a 40 Ford 2-door sedan.
Front fenders and running boards have been removed.
The rear fenders are two pairs of 40 Ford rear fenders welded together
to give an enclosed, pontoon look. The area behind the doors has been
shortened and pie cut down the middle to produce a boat tail look.
A Zephyr grill might add a bit more style to the front end.
A two tone paint job finished this one off.
Also some work-up sketches I used to make the final rendering.

Hi all! It's been a while since I had something new to show, but here's a T-shirt I did for the Norwegian Chrysler club. We printed one orange on black, and one dark blue on orange, and yeah; I know. –It's not Hot Rods but it is art. Hope it can inspire some of you like you inspire me each week.
Medium: Pencil on paper (upper and lower car) Ink on paper (Middle car) Digitally cleaned up and stripes added. Typography digitally drawn.

The works here on the tread are very nice.
** May questions to the artists follow:
1. What medium are you working in oils, acrylic, pastels etc.?
2. Type of surface do you use watercolor paper, Illustration board etc.?
3. What is the scale of your works?
Thank You

:D Some high dollar car guy should build your design here, the styling is way out there and full scale would be a winner. Great design work......

To answer your questions:
1.) I'm working with a relatively new paint medium called "Watersoluable Oils"-They paint exactly like regular oils but they clean up with water and can be thinned out with water instead of harsh chemicals.
2.)I build my paint surfaces out of masonite hardboard panels. They are primed in gesso to accept paint, etc. The panels are then cradled at the back with 2" boards mitre cut to create a backing frame.
3.)The particular paintings shown here are roughly 11" x 14". I usually work in a larger scale of 24" x 36" but have recently moved up to 36" x 48". That's why I like building my surfaces out of harboard panel, it's easier to change sizes whenever you want, instead of messing around with stretching canvases. They're also a whole lot stronger than canvas.
Hope that helps! I really appreciate all the compliments so far guys, makes me feel like I am going the right direction with my new work! Excellent start to the show, insane talent as always!~Mojo

Thanks Mojo Watersoluable Oils that's a new one for me, I'll have to try them sometime. I've worked in an art store before and during my college days so I understand what your talking about. These new WS oils have to be great.......
Now if some of the other artists would answer the same questions. Inquiring mind wants to know. Thanks

1. I literally work in whatever medium is handy. My finished pieces are often multi-media creations. I "Frankenstein" a LOT.
2. ditto
3. whatever is necessary to have my piece tell the story I want it to and give me the desired impact that I require.
I try not to limit myself to only one medium. As a professional artist for the last 20 years, sure there's been certain mediums that I gravitate to in order to get the job done that the work requires. But I personally think that sticking to only "one way" of doing things, severely limits one's growth.

Photochopped
http://img505.imageshack.us/img505/6631/62fordf100gr2.jpg
I did the whole body with Photoshop brush and than pasted some bits from other cars. The grill is from a 66 F100, the bumper is from a bel air (modified a bit) the mirror and the side badge are from a 53 F100. I took the rims and tires from a beetle (dont kill me xD)
Hop you like it...I think it is Hamb friendly! :D

Nice start to the FAS everyone!
The water soluble oils sounds interesting.... I'll have to look into that. But I agree that painting on gesso'ed masonite is way better than canvas. I got away from it years ago beacuse they couldn't wrap the masonite around a drum scanner!
Anyways, since none of my newer stuff is really available for public viewing yet, but I'll take last week's sketch theme and drag it out a bit longer!
Some of these are just pencil & paper, others are 100% digital (Corel Painter). I'll put the finished work next to them where applicable as a comparison.
This sketch is only about 2" wide on paper:
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a157/mikeshoaf/Sketches/RoweScan1.jpg
And the final design:
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a157/mikeshoaf/Art/Model-A-shirt450.jpg
Again, about 2" wide pencil/paper:
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a157/mikeshoaf/Sketches/FEDsketch.jpg
Which ended up like this:

Flat Top Bob's car:
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a157/mikeshoaf/Sketches/OwensMerc3.jpg
And the shirt design:

Carguy88 - Great PhotoShop job, very well done!
Cruiser - My monster drawing started 10 years ago as a pencil sketch on cheap Xerox-paper. I then inked it by hand using a fine brush and India ink on same paper. Several years later I scanned that black and white original into the computer and saved it as a digital file. Three weeks ago I took that file and added the colors in PhotoShop. The original size is about US Letter.
Slide - Love your designs!

Cool stuff as always everyone! So much inspiration so little time. Here's some pics of a Telecaster guitar I just finished striping.
I also did some 'distressing' of the chrome and reversed the wiring, put a different neck on it and installed different pickups. Is it a HotRod? Scrounged, bartered, stolen parts modified and installed to suit the owners need for speed and style... I guess it should qualify.

Great show so far, it seems like there are popping up new talented guys all the time here! Your painting really rocks ubermustang, I love the "Salt City Special" RPU, both in real life and on your painting!
I had planned to draw something for this weeks show, but somehow my time disappeared, so here is an old photo from my vault. This one is taken in 2006 at the Jokers Car Show in Sweden, and it shows Petri of the Pistons sweet RPU!

mojodaddy - nice paintings, do the watersoluble oils have a longer drying time than acrylics?
good art everybody
Yes they do dry a lot slower than acrylics, which is the beauty of them because you can get more subtle blends and fades from darks to light. They do however dry faster than true oils, which is also nice if you're used to acrylics like me~:D I agree that we should keep up some sort of art info on the HAMB since this place is filled with so much freakin' talent! Hey Sonny Welcome!
I've seen a few of your peices here and there but this is the most I've ever seen in one place… Man you've got that "Rat Fink" stuff down!!! Great job!!!
I'm working on a Roth peice now… Maybe my last!?… ("never say never"…) I'm trying to get all that "Roth Clone" stuff out of my system… it's so much fun it's very addicting! (Not suggesting anyone else should, just what's right for me!) But I had my own style before I worked for him, so I want to get back to that! Besides with guy's like you out there keeping the torch lit in such a skilled way Ol' Rat Fink live's in good hands.
I had an Iwata once, cost me an arm and a leg to get, and then some dude dropped it and broke the tip off after I'd only used it a few times… and he wasn't good for it and the store I'd bought it from had gone belly up! So I went back to my trusty Paasshe's… me thinks I'll give Iwatta another try… What model do you use?
Again thanks for posting I realy enjoyed your stuff!

Thanks! That's my goal. I want to be 8 years old again. Haha. I've been in contact with George Trosley. He's trying like hell to get someone to resurrect the old CARtoons magazine and wants me to be involved if he can get it going again. Compliments always mean more when they come from another artist that I respect and your work is amazing! There is so much good stuff on this thread. Tons of talent on here!
Your work looks great bro! I also love the old CARtoons and have been collecting the Trosley era issues (73ish til the end). I've also tried to scan all the covers of all my issues and the more interesting work inside them. The only problem I've got with CARtoons coming back out again is that all of my iron ons from the mags won't look quite so retro anymore!:D
So......yes I'd love to see them come out again!

I doubt he'd even know about the HAMB and, after reading most of the books about him, I doubt he'd even care. I think curmudgeon would be one of the nicer titles he'd answer to. But, as far as I'm concerned, there's no denying his role as father of what we all kindly refer to as Kustom Kulture.
I owe him a great debt. He was a great talent and tops my list of the great characters of Hot Rodding.

I see one a couple pages back. The art looks good, but it's displayed so small it's hard to really say much. When I click the image, it just goes to imageshack's main page, not a bigger image of your art.

THIS is cool. I greatly appreciate the elevation/floorplan. (I took a lot of drafting courses long before the advent of digital age) The piece you posted invites the viewer to explore your art and thus your shop... Your style is honest and original... old school... I dig it. Looks to me as if you had a cool place to work...

I never thought of this as my place of work --I was 9 nine when the place looked like this -from my memory, about 1972--it is the family business shop but yes I did work there--I washed the toilets and cleaned the rubber carpets--hahaha. I also pumped gas for one day, I charged $1000 for 10 bucks of gas and that was it-still not good with math hahaha!

Man, your stuff rocks! I always enjoy your posts.
GaryC.

fortypickup, nice entry this week. Thanks for the kind words. This one's for you.
Here are a couple study sketches similar to those I use for inspiration when designing posed girls to work with the cars. I don't use 'live' models any more ( I don't use dead ones either.) I find making them up as I go is more challenging and the wife is a bit more understanding. (Not a real problem as she's most supportive of my art.)
(I don't give them names either.)

All the more reason to get your own PC enabled phone/blackberry/I-phone type of device....last week at my office they blocked all 'Listen Live' functions which sucks because I like to listen to various radio stations from places I've lived before or when you simply cannot get AM inside a steel-framed building.
People bring their XM/Sirius receivers into the office, pretty soon if IT keeps blocking online services we'll all have our own PC-phones and or small laptops linked to the Web via cell-tethering and none of us will get any work done then!
