i went ont he uhaul website to get the price on renting a car dollie or a trailer today..my dad is coming out here for my graudation, buying a newer Z71 pickup, and hauling my wagon back.we were going to rent a dollie/trailer,but according to uhaul's website my wagon weighs too much for either.but i have seen cars and trucks as big as mine on both.

so my question,is a 64 olds dynamic 88 wagon really too big for a uhaul car dollie,or is it something they say because of the wear and tear on the dollie its self? its going to be hauled from phoenix, east through NM,TX and up to MI

seems to me the car would be to heavy but i'm no expert on their dolleys, but i'de get a car hauler to put the car on..we used a uhaul car trailor to haul the 49 merc..

their website says that they are both rated for 3900lbs,so thats why i was asking.

Check the width of the U-Haul trailer, we just got a '55 Ford E-250 on one.

i have access to free use of a car dolly,so thats what im trying to go for.

so if they are both rated for the same load,i should beable to use it with no problems, just as long as we keep checking the straps?

i once hauled a F-250 4x4 about 100 miles on a tow dollie,just barely fit width wise (big tires) tow vehicle was a 1-ton dodge van.no problem-george

Need to check the track width carefull too. U-Haul says a shoebox Ford won't go on their dolly either. It does run just barely on the edges of the wheel "holders" (for lack of a better word right now), but I towed 'em all over with that.

If it's an auto, be sure & pull the driveshaft.

yeah,i guess i will have to get the measurement on the wheels and have it checked.as far as what they are telling me on their website,it is this

Choose your equipment
The Oldsmobile Dynamic 88 (RWD) is too heavy for U-Haul towing equipment.
You may go back and change your towing setup or continue without towing.

the only time i can see it being a pain in the ass,may be like the continental divide maybe? we could always take it off and drive it through that though.its definatly not an inoperable car.just rather not chance anything going wrong on the way and being stranded

Lie to them, I hauled my '62 thunderbird from Orlando to Dallas, it weighs 4300 lbs, we just told them it was an '82 thunderbird. Of course, we did keep the speed at 60 the whole way back and popped both or the rear tires on the car (not the dolly)

I just hauled all my shit 1500 miles with U-POS-Haul.

I say lie to the bastards and get the trailer and insurance.

Or buy a cheaper truck and buy a trailer outright.

My 71 c-10 pulled my 85 saab on a dolly no problems.

my $.02

Did that a month ago, I found out a dolly was as expensive as a trailer, so I just went with a trailer, was also getting the same weight message with with dolly....I had to lie about the year of my car I told them it was a 55 Olds...though its a 53

i used a u-haul double axle trailer to haul my '64 impala (which had another 500 lbs.of batteries and pumps in the trunk)into and through new york city for a tv show audition, as you can imagine, new york roads leave a bit to be desired, and this was about a 350 mile trip round trip, no problems, just don't tell u-haul what kind of car it is.

every one lies to u-haul about what you are towing. they would not rent me a trailer unless i rented one of there trucks. I rented the truck and trailer then parked there truck and used mine so i would not get fucked on the miles they charge.had the truck and trailer for 6 days and only put 30 miles on the truck http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

i used to work for uhual. they wouldnt even tell us why. i think it was for liability reasons. just tell them your towing a 86 toyota with the z71. thats all i ever put into the computer any way when i did it for people i knew. its just some dumb thing they do. its allso in part for you to rent the trailer. and i would go with the trailer if i were u. it should onley be 20 bucks more if any.

definitely go with the trailer, not the dolly!

it will deff. fit on the trailer but probably not the dolly. i say this because 2 years ago when i moved across the carolinas i hauled my 64 buick wildcat on one of the trailers. the dollies don't have enough track width. hell the wifes 63 fairlane barely fit the track width of their dolly. some of the other movers may offer wider but i'd just get the trailer as said above it's not much more and you don't have to go thru the trouble of pulling the driveshaft that you would with a dolly. my buick can't be dollied because the ass end drags the ground even on low profile dollies. thereis a guy around here that makes 'em that will haul severly low cars but they are pricey. basiclly go for the trailer cause if my fullsize buick will fit so will your car. oh yeah the ass end may hang over a bit bit the full wheelbase fit on the trailer fine which is whats important...ken....

With a heavy car, the dolly is more likely to sway on you than the trailer will...

The dolly also ain't the best thing in the world for your rear end...

Did I tell you to disconnect the driveshaft? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

another reason to go with the trailer is you cant back up a car on a dolly.

go with thte trailer holmes, and LIE to those rotten cocksuckers at U-Haul. i'll never give them another dime of my money. they dicked me bad the last time i rented a dolly and when i was returning it there was s couple in there who had RESERVED a truck but when they got there there was no truck for them. i thought the guy was gonna KILL the asshole behind the counter. their customer service SUCKS and their company policies are bullshit.

Carefull, one of the reasons they ask for the type of car is because they have a couple sizes of trailors. I hauled the 54 from Denver and it sucked!!! Their trailor didnt allow for placing the car anywhere but in the wheel saddles and it threw off the tongue weight!!!!!!!
