hi everyone, first time here. always loved hot rods and i just finished building my first bike so that one day, when i have the cash, i can hopefully take what i learned to build a roadster.

anyways i just started pinstriping to pass my free time between studying at FSU.

i literally just got my brushes and one shot two days ago. i tried to lay some lines and amazingly, my symmetry was good but i'm having trouble either loading the brush, or i need to thin the one shot cause the flow is hit or miss.

do you guys thin your one shot with a little mineral spirits? and how do you do it.

thanks, here are some pics of my norton custom i built.

Most of the common basic questions your likely to have are probably covered here: TechOmatiic (http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/postlist.php?Cat=&Board=UBB4)

I use 1-Shot High Temperature Reducer, and work out of a couple plastic medicine cups.

Welcome aboard.. kinda funny you ask that... a little birdie told me today to use Kerosene. Really, something about how it makes the paint "flow". That's second hand, but Chromedrat speaks Da truth!!!! Stitch'
BTW, that Norton Kicks Ass......

ok, thanks for all the cool replies about my norton.

it's one of a kind since no one makes hard tail frames for it i had to make it. (with help from my older friend who is my teacher) i'm the apprentic... LOL

well, i'll fill out my profile.

and fsu is florida state university, i'm a history student.

fresno? i wish. never been to california but my teacher of fabrication is from there. could learn alot about pinstriping there, huh?

the norton i built is still being wired, it will be featured in The Horse when it's done..

Welcome to the HAMB. The bike is very cool.

I've heard of guys using kerosine for "flow enhancement", but I don't know. Use Penetrol or the Edge, these are specially made for that purpose.

Mineral Spirits sparingly for thinning or Naptha for faster set up time.

1Shots high and low temp reducers are good too. Don't mess around with brushes either, get a Mack Series 10 OO or OOO.

Practice, practice, practice and come over and hang out on the Friday( thursday if your from Oz ) http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Art Show.

Did I say Welcome?

Joel:The old cans of 1-Shot used to say that right on the label, but only in hot weather.
Welcome another striper to the fold.Haven't seen a custom Norton in a long while.Almost got my hands on a Dunstall-Norton once but the deal fell through.

I've heard of all kinds of "secret additives";
some of them make sense, some are a little off the wall, others are just plain wrong.

The idea is to make the paint dry slower.
But remember, anything you add to the paint needs to polymerize,or evaporate completely.
Otherwise you will change the chemistry of the paint film, probably reducing it's life span.

Penetrol,Smith's Creme,Linseed oil,or Boiled Linseed,will polymerize.
Mineral Spirits,Naptha,Kerosene,etc will evaporate.

Mineral Oil,Motor Oil,and Transmission Fluid, are NOT valid options.
They are used to store brushes because they DO NOT dry,the exact oposite of what we want.

I've often thought the right combination of Penetrol and 1-Shot High Temperature Reducer
would work well in hot weather.

fella that told me about kerosene had been using it for 49 years, i'll have to stick with it as i really don't have any place but online to get supplies. i have heard from the same guy that naptha causes the striping to be much less durable, a sort of wash off design.

Don't both of these come from the same source ? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

i don't know, but would be interested in seeing for sure. it is truly amazing how many different ways people can come up with to do this stuff. anybody have problems with kerosene and durability? i'llkeep my eyes open for the right stuff to use, but this town has NOTHING in the way of art suppleis beyond crayons, and i am really trying to not rack up any more credit card expenses http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
