I would like to build a 40s style teardrop trailer. I want to use wood for the outer shell. Any one know where I could get some plans? I'm talking a small trailer no longer than 7 foot not counting the hitch.

go on the web, enter search words "teardrop trailer". you should get 4000+ sites. At least six good sites with plans.

I understand there was a plan in a 1947 Popular Science but I have not been able to find an issue or know what month of that year.

There was a very detailed write up/plans/article on teardrops about 10 years back in the old "Hot Rod Mechanix"
magazine.
Maybe someone out there still has that issue?

Get ahold of Tex Smith at his publishing company. the last time I heard he had reprints of the Popular science article for sale for $5. His address and contact info is in his adds that appear in a lot of mags.

My friend Sumner's page with a section on teardrop trailers
http://purplesagetradingpost.com/sumner/sumnerindex.html
and lots of other neat stuff. Note that his own teardrop is a high/low style and the upper part is raised to walk in height by a hand winch.
