Well..spent yesterday finally getting the Hemi A all sorted out....I have been having fuel issues since I had the the 97's redone(triples on my 241)
I changed the Holley reg. to a low pressure unit and set the pressure to 2lbs......place 3 fuel filters inline(1 forward of the reg. and 2 aft.
Tinkered with carbs and had it running perfectly.600-700 rpm at idle...set the progressiive to kick in at around 1800 rpm......anyways....pulled out of the drive way to try a flyby....eased out of first gear..perfect..shifted flawlessly.....buit up speed .....second...again great......drove a little bit more and all systems seemd go.
Once around the block I figured I go again.....made the same motions and everthing worked great.....as I motivated down the small bend approaching my home....a strange clunking and grinding came from the tranny...then the revs went skyhigh.(around 1500 rpm)....stopped the car....no clutch! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gifWTF!!!!!!.stepped out of the coupe and gas was NOW pouring from the lead carb!!!!!!.......Again out of the top Acc. pump........yea I checked for dirt in the needle/seat area...zip!....My heart sank faster than the lusitaina. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
I have replaced the fuel lines,I installed 3 filters.these are new carbs.....the tranny is new,the clutch, pressure plate and throwout bearing are new..... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif
I tell ya guys...I am at the end of my rope......and ya know,..I would take it to a local spped shop or builder due to my frustration......but if it don't have a 700R and a SBC...the folks around here are lost.... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Brooding/The first thing I did (on the side of the road) was to visually inspect the mech linkage..no problem there.....that means (I THINK) it is internal....I spoke to a friend last night who specializes in manual boxes.....he said it sounded like the pressure plate was done.........IT IS BRAND NEW!!....(sorry ,,Iam not yelling at you, just the situation http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif)
I do have a Edmunds 2-pot manifold and some 3-bolt rochesters in the shop.......maybe........just more $$$$$$$$$

Sounds like 2 unrelated incidents, they just showed up at the same time.

Just because parts are new doesn't mean they are defective.

Brush do you have a return fuel line for the excess pressure? might be your bleeding excessive pressure past the regulator

hows the clutch pedal feel with the return spring off?

you say the clutch is gone, that mean its not grabbing or not releasing?

Like them other guys said take a day off and then come back with new calmer problem solving

I think we've all been in your position. I know I have but my shit usually breaks when I am flat broke, no place to work, in winter and have a job interview 40 miles away tomorrow!
If you have something else to drive ya might clean the garage and spend the rest of the weekend having non-car related fun. I like to go to a movie and maybe fish a local lake for some crappie and bluegill.
I gotta say..it sounds like you may have gotten a little hunk-a-shit between the needle and seat in that front carb [filters or no filters] or maybe have a pinhole in the float, allowing it to slowly sink.
I've had the clutch fork leap off it's pivot before, loosing all clutch action. It happened because the clutch was adjusted too loose...my fault. I was too lazy to adjust it right.
.........and Brush, be glad all this shit happened close to your home. My clutch fork did the chicken when I was on vacation...happened in Ukiah, California where I didn't know a soul. A gas station owner was gracious enough to allow me to use his lift to fix it...took zero dollars and about 10 minutes...good luck on the repairs when you feel like doing them. Ain't hot rods fun!?

Like Rocky said, we've all been there one way or another. I chased fuel spewing gremlins all over my car till I finally bit the bullet and paid a pro two hundred bucks to rebuild my oddball carb right!

At least you got to go for a ride...all I can do with mine is start it up and listen to the open exhaust till someone puts a rear axle and brakes on the thing!!

Keep at it, Buddy...one step at a time! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Rocky...that Willys (Overland ?) looks just a bit worse than my buddy's did when he dragged it home. I remember his wife in tears saying, "You paid $500 for THAT ?"

SJFast - that willys kicks ass..

brush - perhaps tell us what you plan on checking to kinda get the ball rolling... i know everyone here has figured out a problem or 2 by just talking about it to someone else.... or at least came up with a possible solution.

Brush-

Wish I lived closer Amigo...I'd be over in a second to try and help out. Clearances are critical on that sutff, and carb tuning is a multi-step process you're painfully close to..the fact it ran well means you're right there...just tiny stuff now, but obviously enough to frustrate ya...

...you'll never quit, and you will win.

Tell ya what you do. Bring the patient over to my shop and we'll have a HAMB thrash over the weekend and get it all buttoned up for you. I'll have 20-30 of my closest friends (HAMB guys) show up and the problem will be solved. We did it for Denise with Big Olds so this is an experienced crew. Now I'm sure you would want to repay the favor so just bring your paint set with you and you can do a mural on one of my shop walls. Sound fair enough? Let me know so I can rally the troops. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Also need to know what weekend will be convenient, I want to give Denise enough time to bake cookies.

Hey Brush...hang in there man. It just makes the rewards that much better. Hemis are so damn cool...just take a deep breathe and move a little further. As far as your carbs go, I'd bet you have a bad needle and seat, or that gas is leaking from where the seat screws into the carb, or that the float has a hole in it and therefor not closing.

Brush, I just went through problems such as yours(Still have issues, but that's another story). I had to take all three of my carbs apart and really clean them good. I mean really good.Every orfice.Block off the front and back bases and get the center carb to idle first. Then add the other two. Your needle and seat are over floating. You need to have a float gauge and set the float height to 15/32ths from the top of the bowl. See Mike Bishops book(How to Build a Traditional Hotrod) for info on this. It was very helpful. Also the screw that holds the float in place has to be good or it will leak out. Hope this helps some. I'm learning as I go through my problems.

Grinder

Some times they will leak when the weather is cold until they warm up.Just the least bit of dirt or crap in the gas will make them spit and sputter. Take the top off and make sure there in no crap laying in the float bowel area check the needle seat vavle make sure nothing stuck there .You'll get it worked out.Put on some tunes and take your time so you don't miss somthing you may be over looking. When you say new how new? How long have they been sitting before you used them.

Well..I took everybodys advice and took the weekend away from the garage.....had a few brews, went to a buddys place and spent time with the family....even tried to chase the wife..she is too fast http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I am gonna load up the car tomorrow and bring it to a buddys place to check the tranny....first things first.
Then start on the carbs......got to keep in mind, this is just a hobby.
I want to thank all my Hamb friends for there positive advice.

This is a very good place http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Hi Brush. I set up my two 97's on the bench with a 2 pound pressurized can of water (safer than gas) with the tops off. You can check the actual float level, not just a guess with a ruler, suck some water out of the bowl with a syringe and see if it fills back up, push down on the float to over fill, and generally have a good old time playing around with it. A bad float will be totally visible as will be a bad needle valve.

Still flatheadin', pigpen

The pigpen reeks from the dust and dirt of ancient civilizations.
