Are the cams in "Vortec" small blocks interchangeable with cams and lifters from regular old small block Chevys? By "Vortech", I mean a 1991 Chevy 305 with the center bolt heads and TBI...

...can it use any small block Chevy hydraulic cam?

(I know little about these "new" cars and engines...but I got a junkyard basket case dumped on me at work and it's up to ME to bring it back to life!)

I know that SOMEONE here will be wise to these new fangled motors!!!! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Yes they are interchangable.

Even if the block is a roller cam one with the tapped bosses in the lifter valley, you can use a normal cam and flat tappet lifters in it.

I've done a bunch of early 90s pickup engines up as hotty motors with cams and normal carberd intakes.

Just watch for pushrod issues... the newer stuff is shorter... They used self-aligning rockers... don't want to use self aligning rockers and guideplates.

...unless you want to make pretzels!

The Vortec engine series started in 1996......... the 1991 305 was just a regular combustion chamber engine with a 1 piece rear main seal and center bolt valve covers. The center two intake bolts were also straight up and down....not at 45 degrees like the 1955 to 1985 or so models.

Actually, while you may be correct about the Vortec V-8's, the Vortec 4.3 was available late 91...
