I had one in a Pontiac Ventura.
Wouldn't turn the tires on ice, but I got over 20mpg all the time, with a best of 24mpg.
Great engine for a kids first car!

If its a "260" ('2A' on the cyl head), its an underpowered anvil of an engine. (267 being the itty-bitty SBC) They live forever since they dont make any power. Olds started making them around 75 or 76, stopped around 1982. You'll find larger valves and pistons in a 12hp Kohler.
The engineers needed a small-cid engine quickly so they took the 350 (4.057x3.385 stroke) and shrunk the bore size down. Same crank. Same rod length, crappy rod. They tried to make the bore smaller, but the rod would hit the cylinder wall.
You cant give them away. I've had a free one for 4 years that will be sold by the pound within a month or so.

if its a real sbc (undersized http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif) all the parts will be interchangeable to a certain degree so I'm scooping it up, it comes wrapped around the car with a dead transmission, but might be I'll strip the car and scrap the body
I still got the 48 merc pickup to fart around with and the kid can have his way with it and get a couple of his friends over and make some kind of abomonation from the 2 http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif worst thing that can happen is they lose most of my tools right? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

NO, it's not a SBC. It is a severely downsized Olds engine. You have the same weight and exterior size of a small block OLDS 350 and much less cubes. This engine was part of GMs answer to putting smaller engines into their cars. Chevy did the same thing with their 267 & 262 smallblocks. They shank the bore and used an existing long throw crank to get less cubes. These downsized engines were ok in tiny cars or for grandma's fullsize boat that only went 20 mph to the grocery store on Saturday!
