View Full Version : Would you pay to use the HAMB?

In light of the attitudes of some of the FNG's on the HAMB, I have had a bit of a brain storming with another Hamber. Would you leave the Hamb if it became a "members " only site? Yes I know we have the Alliance already . How about making it so that if you are not an "Alliance Member" you can only view threads not make posts to them. Hell make it so that unless you are a member you can only see the headings of the classifieds and none of the add content. I feel pretty good that this will help the Hamb as well as Ryan. For the $50 a year that the Alliance Membership costs it would only be another added benifit. At leasty thats how I see it. So what do you think, might this be a solution to the problems?

It was discussed and this was the best option.
The same people would still be Alliance members.

How about charging $1 per post???
By your number of posts you'd owe $700.
I may be out of line...I'm just applying your logic.

I would prefer to not have a members only pay site. I think it would limit growth of the site, upset the mood, and create an elitist atmosphere – all of which I would oppose.

But, what do I know…..:)

I like it the way it is. Question: Are only people with Alliance Member below their avatar alliance members? This would mean to me that Old School HAMBer and senior member are not Alliance?

I wouldnt trade filtering out the newbie/junk posts for missing a talented tech post. If you already know stuff, would you pay to share it? Maybe not. Its good the way it is.

Your idea contradicts your signature........ No ! actually the old Hamb, from when I was lurking is what Im refering to. The FNGs got the what for and had to show some respect to the current Hambers. Ryan I commend you for how the site is run, you have great guys doing a great job, I partially think that most of what Im refering to gets deleted rather quickly. It just ticks me off when someone comes in and starts acting like an ass. Elitist , no way just a way to weed out the deadbeats and asshats. Growth of the Hamb is great, Id prefer quality over quantity anyday . Just something to show that you are serious about using the Hamb , in no way did I imply a per post charge . There are a few forums set up this way, simply a suggestion nothing more . Wondering if I was the only one......

I'm a member on 6 other forums.
2 are non-car related.
I joined earlier this year and I waited til then to join after I got a "feel" for this place.
The H.A.M.B is the only one that I cruise on a daily basis, sometimes all day. The others...I may log-in maybe once a month,if that.
There have been times that I wanted to post some goofy-ass comment...but my "filter" prevents that.
I personally don't understand some of the "flame wars" on here either.
If someone posts something that gets under your skin, maybe that was their whole point.
I do understand what you are saying,I just think that things have a way of settling down over time.
There will always be a "FNG" around to stir shit up/make a name for themself. It is up to the "real Hambers" to try and set them straight.
If not, they can always be banned.

If it says alliance then you paid.

Anything else would still be a hamb member but not an alliance member.

I like it the way it is, I come on here and read more then I post but I can't pay anything to join, and not only that not sure I would if it was required. But I might donate some money once time gets better, but I woulded pay to post on no sites, I belong to at least 10 other forums that I surf all the time and even started my own and there is no way I would make people pay to view or post on it.

Just my 2 cents.

If it was members only, I'd probably leave. I think the HAMB is great, but once you limit it to members only, pretty soon you have a limited group who all think the same. I appreciate the diversity. The idiots and lamers who post, whether they be FNG's or older members seem to self destruct pretty quickly. And like Groucho said, I wouldn't want to be a member of any club that was willing to have ME as a member.

I've learned more from the HAMB than anywhere else..

The trick seems to be, shut up and listen.

If I had to pay, it would be worth the cash.

My thought is if you charge you will lose growth. I became an alliance member as "my duty" to donate. Maybe this is not the same thing as a hamb membership? How about a PBS type "fund" raising push. You know, donate $50 and you get a allman brothers cd. Would really hate to see a bunch of sponsor banners as well. I think if you ask you will receive, but if you demand... I'll head over to the ford barn.

Actually, if you have a paid Alliance Membership you can choose to display that title with your name and avatar or you can choose to display your post status title. In my case I have a choice between "Alliance Member" and "Senior Member". I suppose the moderators have a third choice of "Moderator".

So an "Old School Hamber" could also be an "Alliance Member", you never know.

Go to "Manage Your Account" and click on "Group Memberships" in the left column. If you have more than one type of membership designation you can click the radio button of your choice.

Thanks for mentioning that!!!

Just put my title back to FNG, because that's what I am...
