I found an sbc 327 that is disasembled and it has a "steel" 283 crank/12-1 pistons/crowler cam/double hump heads/Mickey Thompson finned valve covers/ and an intake with a Holley on it. I know what the going rate is on Flatheads and V8-60's but what would you guys pay for a 327 SBC that is in parts on a shelf? Sorry about the post, but I am stopping back by his house in the morning and was wondering what to offer him. I know that I low ball alot, so I was thinking $50-$100. Oh yea, and he has a couple of Model A chrome grills in the attic. I am going to try to get them for around $20 coin.
Thanks,

Oh yea, the valve covers are all fins with the "Mickey Thompson" stamped on the inside. No big M/T on the outside.

If those valve covers are the newer bolt pattern and you want to sell them I'm interested.

i believer all 283 cranks are steel so thats nothing fancy, i think, or at least all 283 truck ones were steel. something like that anyways...

not all 283 cranks are forged- everything pre 63 are forged, after that they could be either

The value of the block will depend on the bores. Double hump heads can be 1.94s or 2.02s. A 12:1 302 with big valve heads is an engine that will mostly be doing it's thing when twisted up. If built right the little sucker would crank rpms that you wouldn't believe. I have heard claims of well into the 9000 rpm range.
unless the guys been living in a hole or has a heroin problem I can't see him taking $50-100 for it.Thats a great combo & worth alot more. Those 301 where screamers.

Check the casting numbers on the heads if they end in 461 or 462 they are the most desirable ones. Sounds like the whole package would make for a nice little small block.

Yea, I am cheep. I stopped back by today and he dug out the Model A shell and it was a stainless one with the Ford emblem still there and I bought a set of 9 finned valve covers with the side breathers on em' for $15 for all of it. The valve covers have on the insides of them "CHEVROLET 3376001" and below it "MICKEY THOMPSON" made in Japan. They also look like they are polished. I need to clean them up. I asked about the motor and he told me that some guy wanted to give him $600 for the heads and I told "Oh?, why didn't you take it" and he said that he wanted to sell the whole motor. So he told me that he wanted $300 for the complete motor, so I got his number. I am going to try to get it for $200. Here is the numbers from mortec:
Engine Block: 3858174....327...64-67...2
Heads: 3927186....69-70...302/350......Camel hump,64cc chambers,accessory holes

Where you at in KS - I think I need to hang out with you a little. Everybody around here is really high on stuff right now. Then again Rocky finds these deals every now and again too. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The guy is yanking your chain about the heads... why wouldn't he sell the guy the whole motor for $600 or even $300...
Anyway, if it is all good stuff, it's well worth $300... put that little screamer in a drag car and take it to the HAMB Drags to HAVE FUN!

I'd try and get it for 200. The pistons are probably old standards(heavy). I know the old pistons in my 265 are twice the weight of the new ones.
The heads would be good builders. You don't need giant runners with a small block. John Lingerfelter's book says you can actually lose power by going to a giant runner thus losing your port velocity. Use the whole setup. You might wanna take an inside micrometer and make sure the pistons and the holes are the same size.

If they are the same size, I'd pass on the deal... the pistons should be a LRCH smaller. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

i went to my local junkyard, and asked if he had any sbc runners....he led me to a caprice with an early 327 that replaced the original 396...it had camel humps, and i pulled it and dragged it home for $250,without ever hearing it run,and man that thing is a WICKED little motor! new gaskets, water pump, etc, and she fired right up! they're out there....
