Im shooting some 2 stage paint and have a few questions to blow out the cobwebs in my head.

After a good prime and block w/ 600 grit, I plan to shoot my base coat down, then the clear. After the clear, a nice coat of one color of flake, a second color and then a few extra coats of "clean" clear to top it off.

My biggest worry is after I shoot the base, I want to mask off some graphics (before the clear), I have always worried I would pull the base up...what is a good grit to use to ensure the base will stick on the primer? what is a good grit/scratch pad to use so you dont see the scratches..??

Can someone give a basic "step by step" on laying some colors, or colors and "top coat eye candy?" (flakes)

Has anyone used U-Pol?

I am NOT a painter, but intercoat clear on the base before you so much as breath on it.

600 is fine for adhesion. You need to seal the job before you put base on it. The sealer promotes adhesion for the paint. You have to be careful about putting graphics on bare base, even with intercoat clear, because it's open for mistakes that can't be wiped off. I've done it tons of times, you just have to be careful (remember no margin for error). I also know that sometimes, depending on product, no matter what preparation you do, base can peal up when worked with.

I'd say the best thing to do IS the intercoat clear if you're trying to speed up the job and save product.

right on about the sealer..i use nason which is a lower end dupont product and it sprays right out of the can no mixing and you can lose the 600 grit ...the sealer can says 220 ...when you tape on the base i would also suggest green tape and blue fine line..as for the flake, you could use binder to spray the flake in order to save clear and it will smooth out better..you can also mix the flake unless you want only certain areas in one color...i would also suggest buying a disposable sprayer from your auto paint store and trying out your color/flake combination on something small..parking signs work great..i suggest this because sometimes color/flake combinations end up looking dirty because you see the product rather than the effect it should produce..i hope this helps
