View Full Version : '34 Ford pick-up stuff....help a Broman out.

I have been searching all over the internet for some helpful info on 34 PUs and it seems like all I get is junk. It's either a MII/IFS or a full fendered truck that hides all of the goodies.

I wanna see some pics of fenderless trucks or rolling chassis stuff. I need to see some details - mostly frame/chassis work and suspension stuff. I want to learn more about z'ed frames and things like that. All I can find is Jimmy Shine stuff - which is cool, but I need other ideas too. Radshit is the only one who has given me some good details so far. I know there is more out there in HAMB land. I read the whole Tech-o-matic over twice and I have been looking at cheap ass web-pages all day.

Help me please. I want details - pics AND words (specs).

32 has a removable firewall just like a car. 33-34 has a welded in firewall. Only 34 has the extra beltline on the back of the cab. If you cut the firewall out of a 33, it could pass as a 32.

Broman,
Here are a few of the frame and suspension on my 33 during the build. The pictures aren't the best, but it's what I've got. I'll look for some others.
I think I gave you the specs for it last time you posted, but if you have any questions ask away.

34 is the only cab with the extra belt moulding

If it's got the 3rd rear moulding it's a 34. If it doesn't, check the firewall to see if it's a 33 or a 32. There are other differences but if you have a bare cab this will tell you what it is.

The 34 V8 hood looks like this only the center louvers are shortened for a V8 medalion. This hood is a 33 (all the louvers are the same length) or it could be a model C 4cyl truck. You can see that the hood has a curve at the lower rear. 33-34 interchange.

Leadsledmerc,

I didn't mean to slight you....I just remembered radshit's name first. You were holding out on me though....

Brush,
Is that frame a home-built or is any of that still from Henry's house? I want SPECS!!!! Kick-ups, channels, where the suspension came from, etc.. That goes for everyone, not just Brush.

You guys are great, thanks for taking time to help me out. I have been wrenching on these newer cars (50s-60s http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif) for so long that I have never really had to study any crazy frame mods like the ones neccessary to build a decent hot-rod. This stuff is almost foreign to me. It's going to be a long cold winter though so I got nothing better to do than to tinker with a frame build.....

How's come Rocky himself never shows up for this stuff? I'll never get sick of seeing that 33.....

Broman
09-16-2004, 01:49 AM
Ok,

I already have a stupid question.

I noticed that Rocky's truck has some pretty long suspension links instead of the typical radius rods. How does that affect the suspension? Does the angle matter much - his seems like it is located lower on the frame than what I have been seeing (under the cab). Seems like most of the shorter linkages are hitting the frame at it's mid-point. It would be good news to hear that it doesn't really matter, then I could just hack away......

Ohh, and I forgot to show you this. I found some links today that might be of interest to the board. Looks like a couple of good places to get sheetmetal patches for almost anything early Ford related.....I can't confirm the quality or even the availability of these sites, but I found 'em. Maybe you folks who have had older cars already knew about these, but I didn't.....

http://www.fordor.com/cgi-bin/store/fordor/getgo.exe?newbasket+/catalog/catalog.htm

http://www.dickspadaro.com/index.html

The first one sounded familiar, but I figured you might want a link anyways.

The second one has a (kinda crummy) online catalog, but it appears to have everything you'd want if you had a rust bucket to repair, and it goes on and on and on and on.......

Having owned Rockys truck, I can comment on how it drove. I forget all teh build info, but those are stock Ford bones, not lenghtened. The truck drove like a slotcar! handled very nice. I took off the remnants of the old rear shocks and it improved, I understand the new owner tweaked the rear spring mts as well.

One thing I can say, having driven lots of miles in the 33 and a 34 with stock type floors/toe kicks. The Rocky33 was a gas to sit in due to the firewall going straight down, NOT using the stock angled toe boards!!!!!! You gain about 6-8 inches of leg room this way.

I'm here, I'm here, Broman. I was at the local cruise last night and missed all the conversation. Gotta few points and some input.
The sure-fire way to check whether you have a 32 or a 33 ford cab is the raised character line all the way across the top, just behind the visor. 32's didn't have this line---top was just flat but 33 and 34 both had the raised line.
My 33 [which sat on a 34 frame, according to the VIN] came with a 46 ford pickup rear axle. This is an open driveline banjo affair and mine had 40 ford axle housings with their wishbones, split with bungs and tie rod ends installed. Used a stock 34 "bent leaf" spring. The positioning of the wishbone brackets was determined by moving them around until I found a height where the spring shackles didn't bind with weight on the car. What you see is what I got.
The front split bones [which are model A, BTW] mount brackets were arrived at by moving the ends of the bones up and down until I got around 8 degrees caster at the kingpin. That put the wishbone mount too low, so I settled for a 5 degree figure at the height you see in the photos. It looked like shit with the 8 degree caster....real long brockets hanging really low and close to the ground.
It drove pretty good but the little truck really needed a panhard bar. The chassis would move around on the rear shackles in a hard corner..was a bit unsettling.
I used a 39 ford steering box in mine. The cross steer arraangement really helps to cancel out bump-steer IF you keep the draglink level with the ground and try to keep it fairly parallel with the tie rod. I took special pains to adhere to these rules and mine drove just fine.
One of the problems with installing the cross steer is exhaust interferance with the pesky steering box. I used that old flathead engine and hadda remove the front header tube and build a new one for clearance.
My frame wasn't Z'd at all but in retrospect, I'd have done it if I'd kept the truck. It had a Speedway flat spring with reversed eyes and a 4" dropped magnum axle and it still didn't sit low enough for me. The Bobbleed method of pie cutting the rails would have been my next step, along with repairing the X in the frame and doing a little boxing...especially the area around the steering box mount. If you go with a cross steer arrangement, check to see if you frame rails flexes when turning the wheel while stopped, with all the weight on the ground. Mine did.

I'm runnin a 4" drop superbell I drilled and chromed with hairpins on a reversed-eye drop posie spring. I ended up with a 8 degree caster. Vega box, 37-41 spindles with the control arms bent. The frame rails and front crossmember are '33 that I z'ed 6" in the rear with 2x3, stock wheelbase. Rear ends a 9" with ladder bars and coil overs http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif and a panhard bar. 15" wheels with RADIAL http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif 165's front and RADIAL http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif 235/70's in back. Bodies chopped 6" and channeled 8".
The truck drives really good like it's on rails. If I did it again I would have z'ed the front or dropped the seat down between the rails or something to give a little more head room. I'm 6' and need to get out and stretch after about 1-1/2 hours to get the circulation going in my legs.
All the patch panels I used were from Howell's. The price and delivery was good and they fit nice. That's one of the links you put up.

Thats much better.

The one I posted is z'ed 4in. in the front, with a flat crossmember.

The rear is kicked 13in. with the spring behind the rearend.

The body is channeled 6in (the front of the frame is 2x4, everything after the z is 2x3)... it sits level (no rake) with 6.00x16's on the front and 7.50x16's in the rear.

It has 4in. of clearance from the ground to the body. The only thing that hangs below the scrubline is the body.

Chad, I looked through my digital pics and couldn't find any good ones of the channeling. I know I have some prints I will find and scan for you.
My cab was easy to decide on, it didn't have a floor or subrails.

Rocky

Channeled? I'll show ya channeled. Mine had no floor either. Had the rockers welded to the frame rails witha hunk of angle iron the length of the rockers. I started repairs by making front cab mounts but never got the rears done before selling it. Yeah, it was a unibody!
