That's pretty cool.
The first window mounted air con unit was made by a company called Philco-York. Is that one of their units?
And, for what it's worth, the first factory air conditioning was by Packard in 38 or 39. Who made the first widely available factory air conditioning? 53 or 54 GM, wasn't it?

I know a guy that has one, but in Missouri's Humidity it doesn't work worth a shit.
I hear that they work amazingly well in drier States like AZ,NM,etc...

I have one for my wagon, love it... Down here you hardly ever see them. At the Tallahassee show early this year there were so many folks who had never seen one..

Does it Work in SC? I would have thought the Humidity in SC as bad, or worse than MO.
That friend of mine says his blows a little bit of cool air, but with the Humidity being so high the water doesn't evaporate quick enough to make it noticeably cooler in the car.

I've heard they are crap too, whenever I see them, all I can think of is when that waitress puts the Brontosaurus rib on Fred Flintstone's car and it tips over.

Yeah. Those are pretty common down in the south. They just make your car smell bad.
It's just a swamp cooler.

We always called those things "Swamp Coolers" cause they made your car smell just like swamp water... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Pick up any VW magazine and you'll see one. For some reason the bug guys love them. Here's another kind I just sold-

I agree with what everyone has said, it is just a swamp cooler packaged to fit on your car window.
A swamp cooler relies on the evaporation of water to cool the air down. Scientifically, as the water is transformed from liquid to vapor, it takes heat to make this happen. The heat is supplied by the incoming air, so that the air exiting the cooler has lower temperature, but higher humidity. Since higher relative humidity in the air will decrease their effectiveness, it really is more of an accessory unless you use it in a real dry climate. That is why they do not work in the south or areas with high humidity.

Thats what it is a swamp cooler, I bet down south you guys never see those things or the home kind, but here where its dry thats all that people have are swamp coolers for their homes, and I have seen those on a few cars as well. Old school lowriders love those things as well..

I never heard of a swamp cooler back in New England either. Not until I got out in the desert.

I recently picked up one of the lightweight models made out of a kind of textured aluminum at an auction. I may try it on my 66 Stude sometime we have a hot dry summer day (a rare thing in the NorthEast).

When I first saw one of those I thought it was a J.A.T.O (Jet Assist Take OFF) or just a Jet Booster!! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Not to be confused with this air conditioner on a Biplane..., http://cellar.org/iotd.php?threadid=3754
It does kind of look like a Jet engine though..., doesn't it?? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I have one I run all the time on my 54. They work great. Just don't over fill them, you will have water slosh out when you stop and start if you do.
They are also made new by Classic Aire. Look at the giveaways in the Goodguys Gazet. They have one that is fan powered and runs on 12 volt. I believe it plugs into the cig. lighter.
I wouldn't want to be without mine.

I just re-read the Ebay description and one thing is mis-leading. It says you pull the chain to get a blast of cold air.
You pull the chain to re-wet the pad. The top of the pad is out of the water and is what the air blows through/or by to cool. When the pad drys then you pull the chain and roll the pad through the water. Release and it rolls back like a window blind. I live in the desert and last summer went through 40 or 50 days over 100 in a row. On the highway I re-wet about every 20 mins or so.
Also I have to disagree. It does not make you car smell bad.

I just showed it to my pop. He said when his family drove through the desert you could rent them at gas stations and drop them off at a like station on your way out. He also said that his family was too poor to rent one, so he doesnt really have any experiance with them. Damn it would be cool to build him a car with one... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Maybe if Michigan Rick reads this post, he will post pics of his Ford panel truck with one of these on it. He has it painted to match his truck, and it is striped, it looks great!
