Ray, I'll take the passenger side signal light molding - the piece that wraps around the front of the fender, a good centre strip from a grille, and a driver's side taillight housing and lense, for a 51, if you are going to be selling...

Hey Leftturn,

Great find!! I found this 4dr a month ago and I thought that I was lucky.

What are your long term plans with all of those Mercs? I have a friend that is looking for a finished chop 49 or 50 Merc with a chassis swap. Should I give him your number?

A buddy of mine from up north said he would convert my four door to a two door, because the four doors have a longer top. Do you know this to be true? There was a north east custom legend name "Fonz" that he bought four doors and converted them over to two doors because he like the way they looked, and it was alot cheaper.

Good luck with your projects and keep us informed because this kat is taking notes.

Happy Trails,

Mick

Have him call me. THe 4 door roof is not longer. They are the same roof. The best thing to do with a 4 door is a convertable as i am doing. I move the b pillar back and use a 2 door door.

Cool score! It always amazes me there are still good finds out there. My uncle just bought 3 51 Merc 2doors from a farm house I drove by hundreds of times. Never knew they were there. Any have engines/trannys? Either way its a good deal.

Ray...

After getting my Merc up in the air and poking around...the rockers are SHOT. I plan to rebuild them. What guage is the Merc metal? 18?

The rear inner wheelhouses (where they meet the quarters) are SHOT. Any idea where to get repros? Or other cars with close ones I could either get repros for or cut out and use?

I couldn't find any places on the net that make patch panels for the Mercurys, even though they have their share of rot-out parts...my quarters are garbage as well, but after seeing the price for decent ones, I am going to attempt to rebuild them. Any ideas...parts you have for sale??

I won't even get into my front end sheetmetal... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

you can get new rockers. sheetmetal is 18guage i think. there is a place that sell patch panels but i cant remember it. I will hunt around and let you know.
Inner rear fenders , i have no idea if they are reproduced. You may have to bang some out yourselve. I've got plans to make an english wheel. That will make them. Your rockers probly look like the one on my cars. i will get back to you asap with info---------ray

Ray,

I got a set of new outer rockers that look like they will work with A LOT of work...but the inners are a whole nother story...I'll probably have to box them myself...

The lower right qtr you speak of, is this the part on the end of the quarter panel that bolts to the car, or an inner patch panel that goes on the quarter that remains? I'd be interrested if it's for the outer, how much?

this is what i have.it fits 51 2 door.2 rust holes----fixable. its better than not having one at all. I will sell it.

My inner rockers weren't much different. Fixing inner rockers and sagging doors are my least favorite jobs.

Inner rocker patches are just straight sections of "L" shaped metal or a rectangular tubing if you can find it
the right size. Outer rockers used to be available from Mr. Merc, Gene Winfield, or Green Mountain (try a search, don't have their #).

ya fellas-----most of the mercs that i build come to me that way.I built a hydrolic metal brake so i can make inner rockers . It is a pain to fix.Don;t like welding upside down.It hurts .

Since I still don't know how to weld upside down, I did my
patches like this.

Thanks for the great pics, gives me something to think about for a while...I am not exactly sure how I'm going to do this, until I set the body down on top of the Lincoln chassis and flooring. (Some of you may know, I am putting the Merc body on a 1987 Lincoln Town Car chassis). Since I'm breaking new ground as far as I can tell, it's strictly a figure-it-out-as-you-go process for me. This is why it's been so helpful to see how Ray does his cars. I am doing basically the same thing. I just wanted to go all Ford.

The rockers will no doubt need to be rebuit, but I am not sure as to how my frame/floor/rocker interference will be yet.

I don't think Mr. Merc is in business anymore; closed early this year.

A Google search yielded this info though:

MERCURY, 1949-51, rocker panels, two-door, $130 pair; rear quarters, two-door, $799 each. Antique Auto Parts Sales, PO Box 427, Hartford, KY 42347; 270-298-7684, 270-264-1483 evenings, KY; www.aapsales.com

You might try it :D

Yeah, I heard about Mr. Merc, he is out of business. I even e-mailed them about a few odds and ends parts since they said they were selling off their inventory, and got a response from his wife about 6 months ago...despite his demise, they're still not "giving" stuff away. Their prices were still high. I couldn't afford them...

$799 each for quarters is WAY to rich for my blood. I'll sell this project before I drop $1600 on quarter panels for it...I can re-make them for that!

BTW- Thanks Blown49, for the heads-up! :) Anyone out there that needs them and can drop that kind of coin on them- have at it. It sure ain't me.

All you '49-51 Merc 2-Door guys out there with nice quarters may want to start parting your cars now. :)
