I just finished putting together a T-350 trans for the wifes wagon. I put in new seals and a filter kit and a B&M shift improver kit. At the very end of the instructions for the kit(can you believe I read them http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif)it says to use their trick shift fluid or type F. I thought that you can only use type F in Fords...What gives???

you thought wrong.

Use type F or Dexron / Mercon III , you will be fine.

Mercon has superceded many of the past applications which called for Type F. If your Ford transmission is using metallic friction linings, then you should continue to use Type F.
Many high-performance minded individuals may use Type F fluid in place of Dexron III /Mercon in order to get a harsher and quicker shift. That’s fine, but remember that Type F fluid oxidizes much quicker and will have to be changed more frequently.
i have had many b and m trannys and i used there stuff, it had additives in a visous binding that worked with the specific clutch disc, and the ysaid i could use ford with a few quarts of the special stuff, and got perfect service out of it, 2 monthes after i sold one car ,the guy comes back and says the tanny dont work, i said no way it is one year old, and he said well i took it to a garage to get the purple burnt tranny oil out of it and new fiter and it wont go, so i called him a dumbass, because i gave him fluid for it, so i guess your call on , what to use
the ford is better for your mettalic lined packs from B and M

Back in the late 70s I was given many cases of type F tranny fluid when a Ford dealership parts dept cleared out all the old metal cans, kind you opened with a church key or a spout that poked a hole in the top of the metal can. Yeah, I'm showing my age. Used it in many TH 350s I overhauled, just made sure everything was cleaned & flushed so that was all that was in there. Worked fine. Just made sure next owner knew what was in there.

I've been running Dextron 3 in mine and the shifts will crack your neck and chirp the tires if you get on it a bit.
No problems yet.

I had the same concerns 10 years ago when I used my first B&M kit. Still working great with regular fluid changes and type F fluid.

I think this post begs for a couple of you full time tranny guys to do some tech! Shifts, Crosley, others???????

I borrowed a video from shifts (mail it back soon) and T350s are easy inside. I held off on doing the work myself when I found that I had little time, less space and lots of other things to do on the T to make my deadline. I am having the tranny guy that does all of ours check mine out. DOH!
