Tips on being SNEAKY???

Well, being sneaky about dressing up NEW engines to look OLD-
OLD-school, anyway.

Thinking of getting a carberated 80's mustang 302, and I want it to look old-school,
especially to the "non-knowledgable" person-

Any recommendations?

Finned valvecovers and a mushroom aircleaner are good starts for a hot rod look motor. Stamped "Power by Ford" valvecovers with the lettering picked out and an old oil bath off a '50s Ford would be a good start toward a stock looking engine.

You could take a hammer to it and re-shape it to look like a 65 Mustang...the way Ford did when they emptied their brains out their asses and designed the "new" 2005 Mustang...

Finned valve covers, early 260-289 intake with road draft tube, early timing cover with oil fill and an older style oil pan...points distributor, Autolite 4v, vintage air cleaner, scoop or velocity stack...

why make it look old? it is or it is not. if you want old then get some thing old. but i guess its yours huh?

A 4v to 2x2V carb adapter would let you run a pair of 94s. A pair of those on a 2x4 intake with 4 94s would be cool.

If you end up with a mopar for some reason, you could put 413 heads and a 413 intake on a 440 then tell everyone it's a 413.

Maybe graft some old Thunderbird valve covers on it.

Wanna really screw with people? Get some old "Chevrolet" script valve covers and graft the "chevrolet" into the stock ford valve covers.

Seriously, put a set of finned covers and a 600 vacume secondaries or old style 650 double pumper on it. The old style, not those polished aluminum jobs they build now. Get an era distributor and for extra points, a generator.

heah bugman. Can you put 413 heads on 383. I've always wanted to run a cross ram manifold. I think the deck height is different though.

My take:

1. Finned valve covers from Cal Custom, Offenhauser, or Edelbrock
2. Old school intake from Edelbrock, Offy, Weiand, or Ford
3. Suitable old-style aircleaner (mushroom or finned)
4. Block and heads painted Thunderbird Red or Gold or black or flathead Ford green or pretty much anything but dark Ford blue
5. Nothing that says "Cobra" on it (too 'Shelby' for a hot rod IMHO)

When I first opened this I thought you were going for stuff like the old "Socks full of lead shot in the headers on the tech scales" trick. (Sneaky Pete Robinson) I know of another racer that had his dragster seat upholstered with lead shot to meet tech weight with the real seat stashed in the truck but I'm not going to name that one. Just my opinion, but sounds like you need a small block Chevy. Im running a 75' 4 bolt. It's got all the fun stuff on it, finned Edelbrock valve covers, 3x2 Edelbrock intake from 62', generator, short water pump, Mallory YC distributor from the early 60's. It's not old, but it's been very reliable. Only one guy has ever given me crap about the block not being "OL SKOOL" enough. After expressing his opinion he got back in his Honda and went home. I would love to have a flatty ( bought 3 all were unbuildable crap), a Hemi or a rocket, but financially they weren't in the cards. My next old hot rod will have a Rocket (thanks Marko), but I don't regret the small block one bit. Cars on the road and Im having a blast!

It's hard to make an SBF look older than '62 when they were introduced, but the SBC below is a good generic guide for giving a general "retro" appearance to a later motor. The same methods could be applied to say a Caddy 500, Ford 460, Chrysler LA-series 318, etc...
