View Full Version : carb problem
rebuild the carb in my parts hauler - its a carter YF one barrel on a 250 all stock with the exception of headers - and it seems to running okay with one exception. when it put it in gear (T350) it dies unless I am pretty heavily feathering the throttle. It idles fine in neutral and in gear, but when I put it in gear it dies. There is also a slight hesitation off idle if I give it too much throttle. Any ideas ??

Sounds like the idle transition ports could be clogged.Did you blow out all the passages with compressed air? The hesitation off idle could be a faulty accelerator pump system. Could be the pump itself, the check ball(or needle),or the squirter nozzle. Tending to die when put in gear could be a vacuum leak somewhere too. Glenn
Wow, that is a long list of things to check http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif I blew it all out after soaking it in a brand new bucket of carb cleaner and then washing it off with carb spray. Cant say for certain I have everything adjusted right inside the carb, first time inside a Carter YF and shit was kinda weird in there...
I've experienced that before, probabaly 2 or 3 times... it seems like it was always caused by a vacuum leak. Once that I do remember, it was a q-jet with a screwed up baseplate gasket. I'd yank one of the vacuum plugs or lines, and see if it makes it run worse.. if not, it's a leak.. well, i'm sure you know the drill...

FYI, you can get a rebuild kit for it at your local NAPA. I don't have the part number, though. It was around $25 or so.
