Here is the story on the ULTRA CLEAN "39. A couple of weeks ago, at the Midland Antique Festival there was a guy walking around handing out fliers that stated his family had a 1939 Ford 2dr Coupe for sale. I took a flier, stuck it in my pocket and forgot about it until 3 days later when I found the flier in my sweatshirt. I called and got directions from his wife and Tom May and I took a 2 hr. drive which revieled a very rare (only one ever built as far as I can determine) 1939 LONG ROOF Coupe. My elation over this turn of events resulted in an offer of $250.
the flier said they were asking $2000 or best offer.
Before you think this is example of a big city slicker taking advantage of some poor country folks let me explain.
The floor is gone, the rear fenders are dented, rusted and cracked, the trunk lid is caved in. The passenger door lower hinge is rusted loose and the drivers door rear post is rusted away from the body. The running boards are like lace curtains and we don't need to talk about the interior which has hosted a small collection of wildlife for the last few years. The topper is there is no spare tire.
On the plus side of the ledger the front sheet metal is salvageable (cracks, dents and some rust but usable). The flathead MAY be OK as there is antifreeze in the radiator and no water in the pan, carb linkage is free and smooth. Th wife told me that her father drove the car to where it was parked so it MAY run. It has been parked outside for 15 MILD Michigan winters.
After explaining about the minor flaws in the "COUPE" my offer was accepted.
Yesterday was the designated to get my treasure. Tom May had a heart attack so he couldn't go, Hatch left his phone off the hook until I left so a solo run was made north. It was a balmy 40 degrees and raining so the weather was perfect. A couple of hours of burning ruts in the lawn where it was parked ( a dually 1 ton Chevy pulling a car which has set for 15 years on flat tires can really raise havoc with a rain softened yard) I managed to get the victim within loading range. Another while with 2 chain come-a-longs and we were ready for the trip home. The pictures are the result sitting in my driveway. My wife says the divorce papers will be served sometime this afternoon. All in all a good day in "HOT ROD HEAVEN"

Hmmm,
You MIGHT want to find out EXACTLY how rare those things are,
Before you go cutting it up into (whatever)
If they are as RARE as you THINK they might be,
You may want to make a profit on it and pick up another project...?
Just a thought-

Gee Fab, since I know that if you retain the flattie you'll want to update the drivetrain, what are you hoping to get for that crappy unsynchronized three speed and that glass-fragile banjo rear end? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Big Cheese, I'm just as aware as you are that the '39 Ford had the only syncro floor shift 3spd that Ford produced. You didn't think I was born yesterday did you? Good for you anyway for giving it a shot. Some of this stuff might be going for sale I don't know just yet.

Actually, I meant first gear. Were the earlier trannies crash boxes? I thought that ended with the Model A. Sometimes my hyperbole gets the best of me.

Cheese, Naw the Ford 3spds were never syncro in 1st gear just 2nd and 3rd. Before '39 they wern't syncro in any gears. Boy this is giving me a woody, I never thought I'd ever be able to enlighten you concerning anything about old Fords. Glad I got out of bed this morning. HAHA!!!

Roadstar, When you come for the '40 coupe I think we can get the unassembled '32 Brookville body to fit inside. That way you won't have to make 2 trips.

Great score Frank. Ya shoulda called me, I was feeling kinda "sick" yesterday. I probably could have rode along.
Since I lost the sedan body I'm outta the market for cool parts. Are you sure Sharon won't want that one instead of the '40? Good grocery getter.

Donzie, I've still got my fingers crossed that she will come to her senses and realize that its way cooler to have a rusted piece of crap with no potential instead of a rust free '40 coupe capable of becoming a world class HOT ROD. She may not come around so I have got to prepare myself to work with virtually perfect 63 year old parts.
