View Full Version : Water out of my tailpipe?

I noticed today that I'm getting a pretty decent amount of water coming out of my tailpipes when I'm warming up. I know that is not unusual, but the part that got me curious is that the water is a bit dirty looking. After the car had cooled I stuck a finger in the tailpipe, it was a black residue.

Carb a bit off, maybe????

Our local humidity has been running from 60% (San Pedro right now) to 90% lately.
I feel like I'm growing gills over here. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
All that moisture condenses in large amounts as your exhaust system cools and then it spits it out on warm up.
If it keeps blowing water after it's hot or is losing coolant then I'd worry about it.l

Thanks, Dr. J.

It has been quite muggy, now that you mention it.

See if you have any water in the oil. If not, I wouldn't be worried. Mine started to shoot water about 2 feet out my lakes pipes. That's normally what we call "BAD". I doubt that you're in that boat.

I guess it depends on how much, but water is a byproduct of normal combustion...

You'll get that on new cars with injection and EPA mandated calibrations, so I wouldn't worry about it if there aren't any other clues that something's wrong.

Crease,

is that why they call them lake pipes? You were trying to make a lake? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Guess they should call them great lakes pipes in my case. It's a really sick feeling. If you have a problem of that sort, you'll know it by looking at the oil. If that doesn't tell you just look at the plugs. If water is in the cylinder, one of your plug will be all super bright and shiny from the steam cleaning.

I have to assume you are running nice green anti freeze in your cooling system,if so then the water that's coming out is probably just condesation, smell it if it smells sweet you got problems. The stuff that comes out is just dirty water on our cars in new cars is heavy on all kinds of nasty stuff, look at some of the high elevation passes all the trees along the highway are turning brown,it's the stuff that runs out of the cars busting a nut going over the passes, thats also why all the new cars have to have stainless exhaust.Old cars are so much nicer.Slight rant, sorry.

Hell I don't know why, but that cracked me up!

As far as the water its mostly likely nothing. If you see white smoke, worry.

Actually, billowing white smoke is most likely a ruptured transmission vacuum modulator, if it's an automatic that has one.

I think he meant steam - sometimes confused with white smoke http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The black oily residue is just the carbon in your pipes.

I did mean steam, not actual smoke.

I felt pretty excited, actually. I even smelled my finger. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
