I am on the lookout for an old round top fridge for the shop that I can customize.

What are the most popular models?
Who all made em?

Show some pics of yo' icebox.

I have seen em around but the price is going up along with everything else.

What's a fair price for one that is running and working properly?

General Motors made fridges for a long time.

This company does some cool ($$$!!!) ones...

I had a nice one I got at a yard sale for $40, worked great and was dead quiet.
The GM ones were fridgidaire. I have also seen them from other carmakers. I think my friend had a Kiaser once. After ww2 they had to make something to replace all the bombs and war machinery.

Thanks Smitty & Root! The idea came to me one night. I wanted something to pull behind my T-bucket, and a Coke cooler was way out of my price range. I thought an old fridge would be pretty cool (pun intended).

It worked out alot better than I thought. When they're fully gutted they'll hold a ton of shit. The only problem is they're not 100% water tight. They're not bad on the road, but they tend to collect alot of condensation inside if left outdoors for any length of time. As such, the poor beast is in dire need of a complete "body" restoration right now. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Root, almost everyone at one time or another marketed a 'fridge. I used to have an International Harvester 'fridge of all things. Of course it was made by someone else but if you look around there are a lot of them still out there keepin' the beer cold.

I recently bought an old (1940's) Frigidaire at an estate sale for 5 bucks. It runs great. I painted it, repaired the door seal and replaced the wiring because the old wire insulation was cracking pretty bad. Saturday, I watched an old (early '50's) round-top Kelvinator sell at a moving auction for $7.50. It was complete with all the shelves and ice cold beer to boot. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Maybe I shouldn't tell you about the 1942 GE fridge I got from an appliance shop about 10 years ago. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
It was the first one I bought, but I thought it would be too small for what I needed. I still have it, it's been gutted and will make a nice paint/chemical storage unit in my new shed.

I come across these things all the time. I`m a delivery guy for Lowes, we will deliver your new fridge then we haul away your old one free of charge!!

I`ve got a 54 GE round top dorm fridge that came out of the Univ.of Mo. offices, it looks like new inside and the outside is still bright white.
I got my buddy a 53 International with a 39 Dodge shifter for a handle (the original broke off), this fridge came from the original owners and they still had the papers that came with it!! We painted it purple with flames and exstinded the shifter handle up over the top about 12" with a skull shifter!

I`ve also got an old philco, dont know if it works though?

Sorry, no pic`s.

This summer, I bought a 50's Westinghouse with a turquoise interior for 20$ canadian. The best thing is that it works like a charm.

My friend's father delivers parcels for a living. Since he spends all that time on the road, he gets to pick up everyone's cool garbage. He told me that he sees fridges like that being thrown out almost weekly, often with a sign that says that they work.

One more to keep an eye out for is a "Stewart Warner" fridge. I found one in a boneyard/creek fill pit and took all the badges off it. Be careful when banging and beating on them they are full of Asbesto's. I coughed for a couple days after tearing one up for the door badges.

Root - I've had this HotPoint in my basement since I've moved in...about five years ago. Never thought to look in it and never thought to plug it in. A couple of weeks ago I thought, "wonder if it works?" Plugged it in and checked on it after couple of hours...ICE COLD. Thermometer in the freezer read zero, main compartment was chilly. We're moving mid October and my space goes from big shitty basement to smallish nice garage. The wife is UNstoked that I plan on taking every bit of my hot rod stuff to the new place...I'd like to have the fridge over there but I have to choose my battles and the flatheads stay. So if you want to drive to KC and load it up it's yours. That's what - four hours? Otherwise it goes in the moving sale.

Here's a pic of my Hotpoint. I keep it in the gay-roge full of beer (or just Gatorade, lately). The interior is almost flawless. One of these days I guess I'll paint it. http://home.comcast.net/~fatassbuick/Pictures/hotpoint.jpg

Runs perfectly and keeps my stuff as cold as, uh, hell. Light even works still.

Had this LEC for about 12yrs now & it just keeps on going, another brand over here was Prestcold which was manufactured by Pressed Steel Fisher who's real game was making car panels for cars called Austin Morris.

Yeah, if you're ever watching Friends, look closely at the fridge in Monica's apartment - it's an International Harvester. My ex didn't understand why I got so excited watching that show with her one day.

Really liked that Crosley fridge.

Curious why I haven't seen any Nash-Kelvinator fridges yet. Seemed the company was known for the fridges almost as well as for their cars.

My wife's grandfather recently gave me his 1944 General Electric fridge he bought brand new. It was their first fridge ever. Before that they had an ice box. He worked for the FAA and so was considered a contributor to the war effort. He was given a coupon so he could by the fridge. Your average civilian couldn't even buy one. He is very proud of that fridge. He says he did have to spend $3.00 on it once to replace the rubber seals around the door....the damn thing still freezes ice.... Why can't they make them like that anymore? sorry no pic's

other than that SMEG do a modern version - same style but modern internals

10 years ago there was a place in Huntington Beach that used to restore and sell these early round-tops on the side. It was called Beach Appliance. I do not know if they are still in business or not.

Hey, what are decent unrestored but restorable round-tops or other vintage fridges worth?

DanO
09-16-2004, 08:31 AM
Here is a link to a site that specializes in restorations and parts: www.antiqueappliances.com. (http://www.antiqueappliances.com.) They can make a new door seal. I would imagine that it would be pretty expensive. I found a place locally that would make one for $35.00. I just used some silicon caulk and repaired my old seal myself.

Funny thing is we redid the kitchen with new stuff ripped out the old and Maytag fridge didn't last 5 yrs. Got tired fixing it and found this 1942 Fridgidaire at Ricks Restorations as seen on TV. And fell in love with it. Funny thing is now we are throwing out all the new stuff and the wife has gone all retro in the kitchen.. She even found a vintage elec defroster thing on e-bay in the orginal box. It looks like an old Jiffy Pop popcorn bubble that goes in the freezer and plugs into 110volts and defrosts it pretty quick. Shes little noiser but I dig the humming noise she makes . The fridge not the wife that is.lol.Doug
