Ok. I know many will see this as stupid, but it's been an issue here at home.

I have the wagon(53 Pontiac)apart somewhat, and am in the stages of prepping it to go for some bodywork.

I also have a 73yr. old local guy who's a wood-graining master lined up to re-do all the graining.

I called fatman, and got a set of dropped spindles in route, plus a set of dropped coils coming too.

Here's the dilema. My wife loves this car and now considers it hers.
She wants it to mimic a "surf wagon". Surfboard on roof and all.
I wanted a subtle tow-pig, or push car look. Or maybe a parts delivery car or an old speed shop type of thing.

Since we live in the armpit of Ohio, I thought a surfwagon would be dumb.
She doesn't care!

I know this is sorta a dumb post, but just thought I'd throw it out there to the masses.

Well, what do you think?

Here's a pic of the monster right now.
Thanks

Yeah- ahh, I would just go with the original plan- I think the only real suitable "surf Wagon" is a Ford woodie. I guess it matters how long you wanna hear about this project in the future...

Speed Shop Parts Wagon is the only way.....

Fuck that! If she want a surf wagon let her have it! Look at old pics, EVERYTHING was game for surfers, as many were not car guys! (Not all, but many) that Wagon would make a killer surf hauler.

What about "Grumpy's Sex Wax" on the door?!? Ha ha... that wuz a surf thing in the 80's right!?! I'm thinkin' if the wagon is smacked on the pavement with cool wheels, a surf board will be a perfect compliment!!! Hell it's all about havin' fun anyway...Right?

BTW, I seem to recall a "surf wagon" in the rodder's journal that wuz a '34 panel truck. Seems to me actual surfers could car less what kind of "tow pig" they used to haul their boards as long as they got to the beach!!! I'll bet several '50 Plymouth more-doors were used. It wuz more about the waves than the transportation. Ask any surfer today.... even a mini van serves the purpose!!!

Just like most times... BLAME JimA!!! Damn ex-GoodGuy! Either way, tow pig or surf Wagon it's gonna be a cool car. It brings to mind the '58 Chevy at KKOA. If nothing else the faux wood work will RULE if it's done right. And it sounds like you have a guy who can pull it off....

HA HA HAHA....sorry Burndup, I just had to fill in for Germ there. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

If it were mine, I would make a shop wagon outta it....but thats cause I don't surf. Actually, I'd be more likely to make a moon shine hauler out of it.....

However, on the other hand, there would be NOTHING at all wrong with making a surf wagon out of it. If the lady wants it, I would let her have it.
Those are words to live by. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Keep the lady happy, play it right and you have a get out of jail free card to drag home another car. Just don't go with some pink shit and those dingleberrys like the surf jeeps of the 60s. You might want to talk her out of the faux surf board too, if possible.

This idea of mine is so cool no ones doing it. That is the litmus test of cool.

Why not do all of it? Make a surf themed shop wagon. Think about all the polynesian tiki signography from years past. Talk to Dan Barnett! You can make a real classy tiki inspired vintage door sign. Think "Honolulu Speed Shop." If she wants to put a fancy surfboard(that can always be removed) in it with wood grain or mahogany veneer( which is super purty) You can always make a push bar to go out front(do you have a dragster or belly tank that needs push starting?, you might think about "honey now that we have a speed shop surf wagon push car, we need a dragster/belly tank to push start) out of mahogany too. Depending on your proposed era for the cars final look your sign can go from simple(50's) to spacey(60's).

Or was your heart set on flat black with red rims and spray painted whitewalls?

BARNETT
09-11-2004, 03:13 AM
I think Harpoon has nailed it pretty good. I was gonna say to make it the "Grumpy's No Surf Wagon"! Letter that, or use your wife's name ("Mrs.Grumpy's No Surf Wagon"?) on the tailgate. Maybe throw a longboard skateboard or two in there. Do you water ski? Throw some water skiis in! Poke a little fun at the dilema! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

you might just have to clone this to use your pusher to the fullest: Roland Leongs "Hawaiian" AA/FD driven for a while by some snakey little kid named Don Prudhomme with an engine built by some guy named Black. I think his first name was Keith.

Convince her that the whole reason (Truthfully too) for having a stationwagon for a surf wagon was/is it's long enough inside to stow the boards INSIDE where they wont be five fingered or blow off on the Newport Beach Freeway. I was behind a 60's Fairlane on the way to Donut Derelicts a few years ago when the bungie cords holding the three boards on the roof let go...
I drove around the pieces of fiberglass and foam... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif
No one puts them on the roof of a vehicle big enough that they don't have to!
Wood grain it, get some long boards and put them inside in the back. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Keep thinking..its getting somewhere...

I say build a push car for the Surfers Top Fueler...

...or, letter it up with "Surf City Speed Shop"

You can make it cool AND keep the wife happy. You both deserve it and it'll be a cool representation of you both.

This can be done right, even as a surf wagon in Ohio...

Grumpy. Let her have it her way. There's always other cars down the road. A panel wag would make a better shop truck anyway. A perpetual "hard look and sharp tongue" is hard to live with. Ask me how I know that.

My wife got into that "hard look and sharp tongue" mode and cut me back to only twice a month. But it's not all that bad. I know some other guys that she cut off all together!

I'll use the word "mimic" alot, cuz I can't think of a better word right now...

There are many cars being built to mimic cars of the 40's-50's, and many more being built or already built to mimic an old rod shop or something similar.
So, I figured it wouldn't be so terrible if I built a surf wagon or "Grumpy's Rod Shop" wagon here in the Rustbelt.

Thanks for the replys, and it still has us "negotiating" http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

At goodguy's 2003, there was a chevy wagon real similar, and it was baby blue(made to look real old) with the wood, it was bagged and sitting on huge 20in thrusts. Had a surf board out the back window and drew a huge crowd. I say paint it light seafoam green, do the wood, lower it, and steelies/www combo and have fun. Always best at giving an opinion, -The catholic http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Grumpy
09-11-2004, 04:55 PM
seafoam green huh?!

I'd been thinking the original maroon-ish color, just less shiney. More satin.

I'd have to redo the dash and seats if I color change.

We'll see. "We're" still in the planning stages! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It's been mentioned here by others, do what your wife wants within reason. You can gain a lot of good points with your wife by making it "her car". No bad pastel colors or oversize billet wheels. Just keep it a traditional style surf wagon if that's what she wants. Then you have reason to get another car to build your way. BTW, that will be a neat car no matter how you build it.

why does it have to be surfboards? hit the thrift stores/garage sales and round up a couple sets of loooooong wooden skis (the water kind, not the snow kind). it's a little more realistic for the midwest, and gives you a whole new area of fake company names..."Grumpy's Speed and Marine"...mf

yes, "surf wagon" is dumb. unless yor surfin 2" lake waves, then still dumb.

First, I gotta know if the lady in SkateFinks photo in the background is "popping her top" (notice where her hands are and the lads smiling around her).

Then, I say, I was gonna do that very thing, with Django's Fairlane, if I could convince SWMBO that I needed it. I think it'd be kinda fun to have a surfmobile around here, mostly cause it's SO DAMN RIDICULIOUS that you'd surf in the midwest... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Again, I must be a sheep and concur that "momma must be kept happy." And, it'd be a good excuse to get her in a bikini, right? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The two looks are not mutually exclusive. Make the push plate and board rack easily removable, and you can go back and forth without too much hassle.

Although I would definitely keep away from anywhere they actually surf. You would have to take a ton of shit.....

I think we have a winner!..maybe http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Monsterflake has a great idea, and to add to the wooden water-skis theme, we just happen to have several old early 50's suitecases that she's picked up over the years(our house is full of old stuff she's brought home). And a really nice, original metal Pepsi cooler.

We may have to ponder this!

Great ideas everyone!
