HankCash put a picture of a nice little girl in it...

1964 chevy C10 1 ton 12 bolt rear end with de-fanged spider gears...

The Farking spider gear pin is tapered, I undid and removed the retaining bolt that pins it laterally on one side, but I cant drift the fucker out... I can get it as far as clearing te gear carrier, but then its bound up in the gears...

THIS IS ONE OF THOSE FUCKIN METAL PUZZLES THAT CONFOUNDED ME AS A KID!!! I dont have time to futz with it for hours, so I beg and plead for help...

Hank Cash will post more pictures of his wife if you help me solve this!!!! (I think he gets off on it...) http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Rotate the carrier till the direction the pin comes out is facing out the rear.

I think you're a well qualified computer tech. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I'm too lazy to read the other thread....

Unbolt the whole chingadera and go get another one.

WHOA... I was told that I need to get the spiders and center pin out IN ORDER TO get the side gears and axles out...

WTF... 18 different ways to do ONE job... I just need the RIGHT way...

fuck.

Ok, then back to square one, how do I get the C clips off????

First, take the pin out and the axles will push inward far enough for the C-clips to simply fall off. Then, pull the axles straight outa the housing.
NOt sure why you're having such a tough time with that pin unless it got bent when the loose teeth were floating around in the rear end...possibly got caught between a couple gears and bent that pin. You may have to torch the center of the pin out and drive the cut-off pieces out of the carrier as a last resort.

If the pin is coming part way out and you have most of the gears broken you should be able to knock them out of the way so that the C clips will come off. You better make sure you save the side shims behind the spiders (if they aren't all chewed up)so that your pre-load is correct. Might have a problem with just sticking in some used spders. If you decide to pull the whole carrier make sure to mark the caps and keep the bearings in order, but then again you may have to buy the re-build kit (you can get it for around 80 bucks if you search the net)to re-install the carrier. Of course there are pre-loads and stuff like that that you will have to pay attention to. You might be better off having it all done at a shop. It got to be quite expensive re-doing the 33's 10 bolt rear. Only $150.00 was labor though so you could come out not too bad still.

I took a day off, no time tomorrow, but I plan to torch it out, maybe monday afternoon, maybe tuesday.

I very much want to quit my job, so some free time should show up.

I need to actually look at at service manual I have for a later chevy, I need to figure out how to check my pinion bearings, and how the hell to remove the pinion, I may need the diff inside there to do it...

I think I'd get the differential gears and pin out first...Yeah, if you plan on removing the pinion nut, you'll need to leave it together to get the pinion nut loose and they can be TIGHT! An impact wrench will really help here. If you don't have one, you can wedge something in between the ring and pinion gears so they can't turn and use a 86 foot long cheater pipe on your least favorite 1/2" breaker bar [or one that has a lifetime warrantee] to break the pinion nut loose.
If all you need to do is check the pinion bearings, remove the pinion nut and slide [or tap] the flange off the pinion. Pop the seal out. If it's stubborn, I've drilled a small hole in the metal part of the seal, screw in a sheetmetal screw and use dykes to pry the seal out.
The outer pinion bearing is right under the seal and you can fish it out with a bent piece of wire to check it...shine a flashlite in the hole to check the bearing race for flaking/wear. If it's ok, I'd turn the pinion gear by hand to feel for roughness in the inner bearing and if it feels ok, I'd bolt the flange back on with a new pinion seal.
Put a little blue loctite on the pinion threads when putting it back together and tighten it until you begin to loose your backlash...stop!
