Here's a few from the early sixties when I had my just-finished deuce roadster on the show circuit. I didn't last to long since it was a daily driver and couldn't compete with the chrome, angel hair and rotating colored lights that defined show cars back then. A few years later at the same show I didn't even place (to much road grunge) but I had my revenge when I was the only hot rod to fire up and drive out past all the show rods loading onto their trailers. An early HAMB moment.

My first show, Tulsa Jan 1960

Rear view. White spare tire covers were the hot setup back then, really.

My best showing, Judge's choice and best in Class, NHRA Tulsa Show Oct '60. It was all downhill after that.
Enjoy

Do you have any more? I'm looking for history on a 5 window Coupe that came out of the Tulsa area, the guy that owned it from 60-67 was Larry Leka.

Marv Ginther's bantam coupe! I loved that car. I thought the narrowed rear end on the street was cool, at a time when everything had the rear tires hanging half out of the fenders. Used to see that car at the Early Times picnic. Wonder where it is now?

Damn! I just spotted the "A-1 Tire Service sign in the back ground. Billy Wilkerson's tire recapping shop on Valley Blvd, Temple City I believe. If you were at all into the So Cal sprint car scene in the 60's through the 80's, you knew who Billy was. He was the man at Ascot before Dean Thompson became unbeatable there. Billy was cooler than ice, super guy, and one hell of a sprint car chauffeur. Thanks for the pic. That brought back some memories!

These are from the Tridents (Garry Canning's old car club) show in June 62. This was the first showing of the roadster with the Junior paint. The car was at Junior's when I crashed the Stude. I was in the hospital, and my Dad and my two best buddies assembled the car and took it to the show for me. It was the first car show at the then new LA Sports Arena. The sign was painted by another one of my pals, Denny Jones, when he was just starting his business. Car's gone, but the sign is still in my garage. Wish it was the other way around. :(

In the picture of the Olds, my guess is George Barris at the front, Jack Stewart in the middle, and R. petersen, Hotrod publisher, at the rear.

Perhaps one of the guys is Jim Skonzakis since it is his car. Barris built the 49 Buick for Jim.

Unfinished car and behind the Buick is Jack Steward's 41 Ford.

Sorry, slightly OT but note Royalshifter's 1967 pic below. Oakland was always known for a very large display of bikes. Note the bikes by the snack bar door in the back of the picture. Pretty mild bikes, one shows a sissy bar and the one on the right looks like it has a mildly extended front end.

Here is a pic from 1968 or 1969, right by the same snack bar door. Look at how the bikes have changed in that short time.

I can't help noticing the radical modifications on all the cars. Like the wild rear quarters and the wild pan on this Chevy. It seems the mods were pushing the envelope but they looked good, well designed, in good taste.

Was this the inspiration of " The Blue Bettle " model RPU ?

This was Don jackson's '56, built by Ray Farhner/Doug Thompson in 1961. It was indeed one of the most nicely styled '56 radical customs ever built. Pearl white paint, both te front fenders and rear quarters bent and tucked under, Impala side trim. Rod and Custom Feature car.

Great thread. I wonder how many folks were like me and attended these shows and events with out a camera.

I think that any of us that did take a few pics wish that we had taken more, but it was a hassle. The average consumer camera setup required carrying around extra rolls of film and flashbulbs. Add that to the cost of processing and it was a bit expensive. The flash was never effective in a big, relatively dark room like a show, so that was discouraging too. Very few people in those days had good SLR equipment either. Younger people who have only experienced built-in flash and/or digital photography do not know how good they have it now.
