Going to bolt in the steering box (Saginaw 605), and will probably need a longer pittman arm than what came with the junkyard box I have (IROC-Z). What other cars should I be looking for to pull one off of that is longer? I will need a longer one so I can bend it to the right angle later.
Or better yet, does anyone have a Saginaw 605 in a 46-48 Ford frame with a 4" drop axle and Speedway dropped arms and knows what the Pittman arm came from, and knows what was done to it to work correctly?
G body gm cars had "605" box's. '78 to '88 mid size, monte carlo, malibu, regal, cutlass, elcamino etc..
Not sure if there any longer though.

If it's the one I'm thinking of and I think it is, check in full size Jeep vehicles - old Cherokees, Wagoneers, trucks. They used the same box and I believe the arm is a bit longer.
May be the same as the earlier Chevy boxes though so don't get mad if I'm wrong.

4t64rd: i have one in a 42 merc. frame. i used the stock arm and connected it to the stock cross steer linkage.i didn't like the adaptor setup, so i modified it into the stock ford steering box mount.had to do that so it would line up with the steering column setup i was using, even tho i was using the u-joint setup.i wanted it all in a straight line with no angles.just to fussy i guess.any questions let me know.

what motors are you running with this swap? I looked at the setup your speakin of and couldn't figure out how to get the motor around the steering box..

SBC with Rams Horns, I bought a bracket from Butch's (I think) and I saw a magazine article that said the rams horns would fit and leave enough room for a U-jointed shaft to sneak in. I have to u joints and a heim joint eye bolt to support it.
But, as with all "kits" I'm sure I'll have to adjust to make it fit. We'll see bright and early Sat. morn, when the thrashing begins.

The 605 uses same splines as GM standard boxes, too, plus lots of other standard boxes including most Fords. That's a smaller spline of course than the big power box like your IROC one. The stock ford would be the logical one if location is stock, if something requires a different shape just take an arm that fits the box to a junkyard along with a cardboard model or sketch of what you want.

Sawzall: the location of the box does pose a problem for some exhaust manifolds, but not mine. i'm using a 49 olds with stock exhaust manifolds,{ front outlet}, but still had to tip the steering box down in the back to clear the rear outlet.i have yet to figure out how they did it back in the 50's with a stock ford or merc. steering column.

thanks.. for the reply. I've see the chassis engineering setup at york for the last 5 or 6 years they have a complete chassis they bring with this steering box installed. I always thought it funny that they never had an exhaust manifold on the driver side..

Did some more research and installed the engine with the 605 next to it.
It will fit, REALLY close... So close that I no longer want to use that setup. I'm going to simplify it, at least for now.
(For Sale: 1987 IROC-Z (quick ratio) Saginaw 605 power steering box and PS Pump with bracket for pump and frame bracket for 46-48 Ford, must use short style rams horn exhaust manifold, block huggers are too big. just want to get what I have in the box and pump, $150.)
I'm going with a manual box that I was told is GM (Corvette or Pontiac), quick ratio (3-3/4 turns) the sector shaft is about 1" (the 605 is about 1-1/8").
I need an pitman arm about a 7" with a 1" sector shaft hole. the one on it is only 5-1/2" form center to center, the draglink hole on the passenger side is 7" from kingpin center to tie rod hole center.
Does anybody know if a 67 Mustang manual box (1" sector shaft) has the same abount of splines as the 1" GM sector shafts?
