I'm looking to make my own shift linkage. I was going to use a cable from a cable shifter so that I can keep my original dash shifter. However, that will not work. Now I am going to make my own linkage. I was wanting to use small rod ends but I don't know what size rod or ends. I am looking to kind of copy what was on it originally but seeing as I have a 318 w/ a 727 instead of the Hemi and powerflite that was there I don't have much to copy. Any help? It's in a 55 Desoto.

Someone makes a cable shifter, to mount under the dash. Uses, I think 36 Ford cowl vent handle. Could be easy to adapt to Desi. Have used them in 32-34 Fords. If you can find a pic its easy to copy........OLDBEET

The problem I ran into with the cable was it just didn't work smoothe. It kept getting in a bind trying to get around exhaust, the starter, and the huge power steering gear box. It also had a hard time getting it out of park.

ididit makes a cable shift linkage kit for the 727 trans...check out their website to see if it's something you could adapt or copy

I've seen that before but the way that the 727 bellcrank is located on the tranny makes it difficult to shift from park. Unless I fab up an entirely new mount to change the angle from the park location. Also my shift handle stcks straight of of the dash. It shoved a rod straight in and out of the firewall to turn another shaft. That shaft then pushed another rod that turned the old powerflite bellcrank. The cable would exit the firewall right about where my exhaust manifold sits. When the cable makes it's gentle curve toward the tranny it got into where the exhaust will be. If I move it over it gets into a helluva bind and won't move any gear.

in that case i'd just fabricate a new linkage from the firewall down to the 727. i'd use 1/4" heim joints,or i/4" throttle ends(you can get them from any good parts store).Dorman part # 115-002 is for 1/4" throttle end.you may have to change the lever on the tranny,or add a bell crank . it will take some eyeball engineering, but it shouldn't be too hard
