View Full Version : ADVISE ON COWL STEERING.

Ok first of all sorry guys been a little busy, chopped the roof on a project last week so I havent been around. I had a question, I'm doing qtr. eliptical to dropped axle in front on the car in the picture bellow so I can get the wheels as far in front as I can. I also want to do cowl steering. I understand under the dash part of it, what about the cross steer part. Does anyone have close up pics of that? no one ever posts those not sure how when you turn the set up how it could turn more than one direction. Can someone school me a bit. Ive already done the search and all I can fine is the cowl part not the other half. Help a brother out.

There is a drag link AND a tie rod. Tie rod "ties" the right and left together. Drag link moves for and aft, it is attached to a steering arm on the hub/spindle

Your cowl looks wider than the front suspension right now. How wide will you new front track be? A steering shaft coming out of the cowl area may not work on your car. You may be able to rig up a side steer set up. What are you doing to reinforce the factory floor pan? You must attach that new steering box to something solid.

the front axle is a 3 inch dropped tube axle, I can use 1 1/2 inch tubing to buld the reinforcemnts for the cowl steering. if you saw the rest of the car you would not doubt my skill. I chopped my Volkswagen roof (compound curves) in 7 days. Removed pillars, has a 6 inch tall winshield. I can fab a mount, just want to make sure I have the bottom part down before I get started, Heres a pic from the side.

Just so you know skill doesn't make it cool. For the time and effort you have spent you could have actually gotten a car that was on topic, yet you continue. I forgive some of the others because they have on topic cars as well.
Oh and I agree that the front suspension isn't wide enough for cowl steering....

OK, Im not using that suspension, I am putting a dropped ford axle on the front. 3" dropped axle with bones. axle will be in front of hood. If you dont understand what we do in our club, come on over.

Sorry When Im done there wont be much vw left. 347 strocker ford in the back, ford axle in front, hairpins connecting the axles in back. People cant even tell its a vw now.
