Hey everyone, on my way to Chicago, my pressure plate seemed to have disappeared. It was with my stuff when I last saw it HMMMM??? I've stopped blaming Sam and started looking for a new one. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif Now I'm in the position of finding the exact one that'll work well with a 28-29 Roadster weight wise and all. What do you guys think is the right size clutch 10" 11" or even 9" I have no experience in this area and could use a little assistance. What should I expect to pay for a good core, my machine shop guy rebuilds them for $100.

You probably have no reason to use anything larger than the 9" clutch - the 11" flywheel is VERY heavy & definitely not requried in that light of a car. The 9 & 10 are pretty much the same (if not exactly) flywheel size/weight wise.

measure your flywheel to see what you need...unless he lost that too. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The easiest way to go is to get one that matches the bolt pattern on your current flywheel. Mine was drilled for a 9 1/2" clutch, and I had a hard time finding the right parts. But I got them from Red's Headers and they were a real pleasure to do business with.

No I have the flywheel, but it measures 13 and almost 1/4" across. here's the picture with the tape. Not sure how it is to be measured.

Then you need a 13 inch clutch then... dumbass!
While you're out looking for one of those... ask around for a radiator for my Corvair and some muffler bearings for my Chevy... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

psp... looks like your flywheel is for about a 9" clutch disk... see the pattern it made?

Fly wheels are the same size, just drilled for different pressure plate size.

So do I need a new flywheel and pressure plate for the 10". It looks like the holes are about 11" apart, so did I have an 11" clutch?

Not 11", the hole for the 11" are close to the edge. You have a 9 or 10. Send the measurements and might have one to go by.

Here's one I took out of a 53 Ford truck. Needs reserfacing but springs are almost like new. It says 9 1/2 inch. $20.00 plus shipping if you are interested.

Matt...the tape measure in the photo says the worn circle on the flywheel where the clutch disc rides appears to be about 9 and 1/2"...That's whatcha need.
And tell your brother he owes you the money it takes to buy a new one...buy the best they have....

The truck 11" flywheels are significantly heavier. Add the extra mass of the 11" pressure plate & it's a fair bit of weight - nice in a big heavy truck to get it moving, but unnecessary in a small car. The 11" pressure plate is stiffer too, but a lot of folks say it's just fine.
9.5" came stock in shoeboxes, so if it'll get those tanks moving, it should do fine in your A

To which I have to call bullhonkers. Clutch size isn't determined by rhe overall diameter of the flywheel, it is the disc and it looks like you had a 9-9 1/2 incher on there before

So lets regroup here, is the flywheel I have ok for a roadster? All I need is the 9 1/2" clutch? That seems to be the consensus?

send me your pressure plate bolt pattern measurements.

Just so you know the 9 1/2" clutch caused some minor problems for me. Seems everyone carries either 9, 10, or 11 inch discs. So if you can get a pressure plate that's a little more standard I'd go for that. I had a custom disk made - it was cheaper that redrilling the flywheel or tracking down a different press. plate with the right pattern - and everything went together perfectly.

I'm at work now Max, I'll get those to you. Flat-Top is tracking down a pressure plate for me as well, just determining if a 10" is ok for a roadster? I found the old disk and it's 10" across. I'll measure that stuff tomorrow morning. matt

Sounds good, thanks for the help...one of these days I'm going to pull out the tranny parts and call you. Definately before the Indy swap coming up.
