"Ward, I think you were a little rough on the Beaver, dont you think?"

I seem to break my truck every Fall...

So, I've had pinion noises at freeway speeds forever, Today I pull out from an alley, but theres traffic, so I have to wait blocing the oncomin lane, go to gas it, but this ass pulls up, so I nail the breaks... thing isnt warmed up, and It idles super low, so it stalls.

And some ass in a mercedes is doing about 60 coming right at me.

Der kleiner arscloch finally gets outta my way, so as soon as the engine fires up, I throw it into low and nail it (like, what I do ALL the time, right?) The engine revs, but the truck doesnt do much, goes forward slowly.

"KLICK KLICK KLICK!"

Oh shit. I do a little back and forth at the red light. It moves forward, but drive to reverse, instead of my usual deep "KLONK" I get the loud "KILCK!" and it seems to be coming from my driver's side rear wheel...

Light turns green, it goes fine, 1st to 2nd shift fine.

Basically I run just ONE of my errands, it seems fine, but I go to throw it in reverse to limp carefully home, NOTHING. Put it in drive, it moves forward after a KLICK, the I get reverse... with a click or two.

Got it home, driving like I had glass gears...

About to go see if my DS axle is busted, and open my diff, see whats goin on.

What does this sound like? Catastrophe?

This is a '64 chevy C10... andbody got a 71-77 rear axle? I want to do the 5 lug/front disk upgrade, might as well start now!

Can't help ya but can relate. Made a deal with my brother in law in May, he'd buy my truck and pay over time since he was strapped for $$$... fast forward to Sunday and I still haven't got a dime from him. So we repo the truck, and I find another buyer. Drive it home, seems good to go. The other buyer comes over, leaves the driveway and puts her in 4 HI and the fucking axle in front goes "BANG!!!" and it doesn't move. In 2WD it's fine, but broke in 4...

I guess that's what I get for being a "nice guy". http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

BTT to help find ya an axle.

Hey Django, do ya still need a truck for your wagon? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Maybe you aren't humming the klicks and klonks the way I hear them but clicking sounds like a U joint. Gears sound like a ice crusher or coffee grinder on steroids. and diff gears gind, bind or quit pulling, freewheel on turns

Yeah, I've done in a manual trans, for a year it sounded like a blender making a margarita,, then KLANGED and it sounded like a big FFing saw was having fun inside the tranny...

The U-joint I let go so long that it dissolved the yoke, first started out as a horrendous squeek, then a mad crazy vibration from hell...

All the diffs I've heard on their way out sound like K-K-KLANG-KLANG-KLANG... Like the liberty bell being shot at with a full auto...

Thats why I'm baffled...

and now its too dark to start, I sure know how to be a slacker! tomorrow... manana...

10-BOLT DIFFERENTIAL SMOTHERED IN PUSSY SAUCE.

There, will that keep a possible tech post on page 1? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Any insight, anyone?

Kind of a stab in the dark, but just before the diff on our lame car let go we had clicking noises like this.. apparently the pin that connects the spider pinions to the diff cage fell out and started rubbing on the case. eventually it just happily drilled a hole through the diff body. That might explain why you get different behaviours in either direction. Just open it up and have a look, it may just be as easy as putting the diff piece back in their proper places and buying some new retainers.. Otherwise it could be bad bearings on either the diff body or u-clamps, an out of round side gear bore or a hig spot on the ring gear itself.. check it all out.. I'm guessing you don't want a pool of diff oil on the ground.

The cross pin can start slopping out the hole in the carrier too and it turns into a slot and a bigget slot until one day you have to tromp it and whang!. Have you looked inside? If you lived closer I could fix you up with a stock rear end for cheap. Swaping will take a bit of fabbing to get something else to bolt to the arms.
But aside from all this I have to wonder why you listen to klongs and klanks but wait for it to lay down in traffic before you fix it? Running a clanking u-joint until it eats up the yoke? Lame

Noname, you rock... I want it.

No, noises were on other people's shit, except for the trans and U-joint on my shitty ol crappy Nissan (Crappa-san?) when I had no time, money, nor real estate to deal with it...

I've had a pinion growl since I bought it... Previous owners had expressed that they thought this rear end wouldnt have made it into this century... so its just time.

Exploritory surgury today...
