My first post here guys so go easy.. I just turned 21 and this is purely a hobby. So my first project is my 1969 camaro that I've been working on for some time. My goal right now is to have a smooth firewall; just a hole for steering column. I cut out my origanel firewall and realized there was no turning back so here it is... and I'm scared shitless I'm gonna warp it when welding it in. Can I have some advice on keeping my metal for warping?? Someone please let me know the tricks...

The first thing I would do is pick up the place so you don't set you or your Camaro on fire. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Alot of people here will give you crap because its not a Traditional rod but damn man, atleast you got the best muscle car! I like them and I respect that you jusat dive in like that. It takes guts to do something like that to your pride and joy.

Just go slow and DONT cool it with water, just let it cool by itself. Do abit, drink a beer, do abit drink a beer. After a few of those stop, welds arnt great when your drunk http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thanks, and yes your right its not a traditional rod but I have to finish this project before I can start another. Thanks for the tips as well.

In regards to tools, currently I'm working with just a mig welder but would like to purchase a henrob; should I just wait and not use the mig?

Get out the hugger orange paint and 502 crate motor and you will be on the pages of Car Craft in no time. Just yankin your chain. Cars like these are great for beginners because you can buy anything you need and there is no shortage of good examples around for ideas. As long as you don't pro-street it we'll let you play in our sandbox.

Just curious, where was your VIN number and is it still there?

If it starts to pull, you have to fix it then. You just hammer the weld to expand it and it will come back to shape. Use a dolly behind the weld and give it a few hard wacks. Don't loose control of the shape because it is hard to get back. Good luck

It's on my desk sitting next to my computer... both the vin and cowl tag. I'll have to get it stamped in the door when I'm all done.
