View Full Version : Photoshop Phun....... Dad's '56 Olds is getting new paint

As some know my Dad has a '56 Olds. The drivetrain and suspension is complete. This winter it's getting new paint and interior. Dad is thinking that he'd like it a two tone blue but different blues then it is right now.

Anyone have any ideas of a couple of shades that would look GREAT together? Lighter in the front, which will be carried into the engine compartment. Darker in the back.

He's also thinking about solid black. I've mentioned to him silver in the front and blue in the back as another choice.

Anyone wanna give it a shot?

I do not have photoshop, but if he decides to change the colors, which I do not think needs to be done, what about silver in the front, and black in the back... just an idea. -Joe

That's a beautiful ride, Denise.

I would consider a regal candy blue rear w/ silver up front. Definately HoK for the job. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I wouldn't change the color at all but it's not my car.Unless you're going to change the interior color also, you're pretty much confined to various shades of blue and/or silver. If you're changing the interior,I would try a gold/bronze rear color with an ivory front color.

09-06-2004, 10:28 PM
Great so far, THANKS.

How about a darker blue, like a royal but not bright, and a medium blue front. Dad is very conservative. I don't think he'd ever do a "bright" color.

Ray, the interior will be redone. The colors will depend on the exterior. Dad wants a completly fresh looking car for spring, Mom is not happy. She likes things just the way they are.

Dad is still looking for a "perfect" hood. His is completly rotted in the front. Any leads are greatly appreciated.

I wouldn't change the colors .........and for the record, it's an 88. The 98's had an ugly side-trim configuration that made the body look thicker, even tho the 98 was longer. I know, I had a '56 Olds 98 ragtop in high school. All the cool guys in High school had 88's...I was a loser.

hmm i would recommend him thinking long and hard before painting it solid black.just a suggestion.i never liked solid black hardtop 56 olds.for some reason its harder to pull off on the 56 model.esspecially with the super 88 trim.maybe its just me.i think the post models look alittle better in solid black, but still just something about it i dont like.maybe its the super trim.there is no shape to it like the 88s to stand out on its own.it works better with a 2-tone it seems.just my opinion.

Denise, first off-your dad's car is delicious just the way it is! However, if he is insistant on changing it, I like the creamsickle look. And that's because my friend Jack has a '54 88 hardtop that is exactly the same color combo. He painted the car several years ago and the reception was phenominal. It still looks great. But, it's already been done. But-I still love it!!!
Just in case you hadn't considered it as yet, Murray Pfaff is right around the corner (so to speak) from you and your dad and I'm certain he could, given your dad's preferences, come up with several outstanding paint combos. Just a thought. Incidentally, in case I forgot to tell you already-I LOVE YOUR DAD'S CAR JUST THE WAY IT IS.

Murray is a good bud of the familys. We see him about once a week in the summer cruzn around. Him and dad have talked about color alot lately. It sure is a small world. How do you know him? He has intro'ed on here this summer. His HAMB screen name is "Detroit Torch". It certainly suits him.

Dad is insistant on a change and I believe he has his mind set on a couple of shades of blue. Picking the right blues will be the tough part and thats why he'd like to see some photoshoped suggestions. I've mentioned before how great the folks on the HAMB are at the photoshop program so he asked me to see if anyone could do up a few different ones for him.

He's coming over to my place tonight to meet BenD and hang out so I'll be showing him this thread then. Thanks to all that posted suggestions. If you have any others, please don't be shy about sharing.

Hi guys, thanks for the compliments. I have to tell you guys though that this is WHAT I DO. Some or you may be aware that I am the guy who wrote the House of Kolor Digital Paint Booth program. That's why I can knock these out so quick. Here is a link to a FLASH demo of the software (http://www.virtuwheel.com/demo/) . Nick I sold the 37 to a guy over in Troy Ill. Denise. I'm going to bore you (and your dad) by saying one more time. THAT CAR IS PERFECT JUST THE WAY IT IS!!!!!!!! I've always liked the fact that it looked ALMOST factory stock but in sort of a SNEAKY way. The stance does the talking on that car. I know I don't have any influence on you and less on your dad but someone please stuff the ballot box with "NO CHANGE" votes.

Frank

hotrodladycrusr
09-07-2004, 04:32 PM
Well Frank, Dad is at my house reading this right now and looking at all the cool color combo's folks did. Most do think it looks perfect just the way it is, my mom included. But you know how it is when one of you guys get something in your head and want a change. He loves the car but wants a "new" look for it. Maybe in Kzoo on Saturday you can talk some sense into him http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Broman
09-07-2004, 05:10 PM
You want my "real" opinion. If he wants a change - change the wheels. The most dramatic thing a guy can do is change the wheels. It'll set a whole new tone for the car. Nevermind that they aren't tradional or any of that jive. It just makes a big difference in the whole mood of the car.

Being a Kustom lover I rather see it more customized (hence the photo'chop) - sell the billet rims then you could afford a small house and a set of steelies w/wide whites and hubcaps. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Or go the other route - sell your house, then you can afford to buy some of those custom billet wheels that look like hubcaps - ala Jay Leno's Buick or the "Overhauled" Ford shoebox.

When you have a slick car like that you really can't go wrong.

Byron Crump
09-07-2004, 06:40 PM
toad, I wish I could afford that program as a toy...I would love to fool with that.

I know software is expensive to develope etc. but do you think you will do newer versions over time and the olds ones will get "cheap?" Im not complaining about the price or anything, so don't get me wrong...I am just kinda wishing I could play with the program for fun someday...you did a great job with it!

Does the one car version do everything except, well...other cars? Can you add more to the one car version?

Sorry for the hijack.

toad32
09-07-2004, 06:47 PM
The single vehicle version (49.95) is for one car of your choice from the database. It does everything the professional version does but only to the one car. You can use that one version over and over but once again, just on the one car. The professional version comes with all the vehicles in the database. If you are building a car and trying to decide colors, than $50 bucks is just a drop in the buck. The professional version does come with updates for the first year. We are doing updates every six months. Hope that info helps and sorry for hijacking this thread.

Denise, thanks fot the pump on the NEW PRODUCT..... that was a pretty awesome show for us. Thanks again for everything

Thanks for the info...I might break down and get the 32 fenderless high boy one at some point.

Can you change wheels or anything like that with it? How about wide whites vs. blackwalls...I know it is about the paint but that kind of makes a huge diff when looking sometimes at the overall picture.

Denise, I was originally introduced to Murray through a friend (Ron Menchey) who met him at the GG's show up in your neck of the woods. I then was officially into'd at the Syracuse Nats and again this year at Columbus. We yakked with Murray quite a bit and another friend of mine from Florida actually drove his '63 Pontiac Bonneville convert out to carrouse with Murray at the "Screw The Cruise" party. He was impressed and had a great time. Murray is FUN.
Now, if your dad is insistant-I like the gray and white combo-a lot. So, he can go with that if he wants and I won't be pissed. As if that matters.
By the way, speaking of paint, have you as yet selected a scheme for Big Olds? I'm still rooting for Royal Orchid (of course, the fact that is the color of my Caddy is irrelevant).
