Ok everyone,
Tell me what is the best thing that could happen to you as a hot-rodder? You could pay almost nothing for a rare part at a swap, you could finally get that car of yours back on the road after fixing all of those "bugs" you've been having, or you could get a lot of help and support from a friend who helps you out and makes your build seem almost easy.....
....well I didn't get any of that (at least not yet), but I did get a free car!!! OK to be fair it's a truck, but I think you will all approve. I also think that you'll agree that this is one of the best things that could happen to a guy.
I have been laid off since January and the free checks are not coming any longer - in fact they haven't been coming for quite some time. Basically I'm as broke as a joke. During my "off-time" I have been giving me dad a hand in his shop. I helped him turn out about three cars this summer. One of them was done at a discount for my best friend, but the other two have been dad's "projects". He buys 'em when they're rough, rebuilds 'em, then sells them for profit. During the whole time that I was there the object was to for me to just help him push more cars through quicker. I was basically a slave - doing all of the crap work, then dad would step up and do the finishing body work while I started stripping the next project down.... It was HOT, sweaty, dirty work and dad couldn't really afford to pay me. Eventually I had to stop helping him and start thinking about how to make a buck on my own.
It's been more than a month and a half since I could help him and I still don't have a job. Long (boring) story short - I have had a bad year. The only bright spot in the horizon is that I am going back to school to get another degree, amybe that will help me land a fat job....
......So anyway, I was sitting at home Saturday - trying my best NOT to cost any money - when dad calls and says he had to show me a new project. I was thinking - man I can't AFFORD to help him work on this thing, no matter what it is.....So I go down ther to take a look at it and KaPow!!! Here is what I see......

Well, that's not completely true Tman...
I have been collecting parts for one of these for quite a while. I have a steering assembly. An engine. My choice of trannys - auto or manual. Tires/wheels. I also have some other odds/ends like guages and wiring. The Harley will pay for my existance for a loooong time. My school loans will be defered and I can still help dad this winter - just not full time. The Buick will probably have to go bye-bye in order to pay for some bigger stuff, but I figure in about two years I'll be running the wheels off of it. Besides that my wife is an ex-banker and is really good at saving money. We have CD's and savings accounts all over town - we just can't touch some of that money for a while.
At first it sucks to think that I am loosing my Harley and then to think that the Buick is next up to be sold I start to get really depressed. I also have a 1974 GTO that will be a goner - but not missed as much as the others. But now I have something to look forward to. There is a lot going on that I am leaveing out - just because I am sure you all don't have to hear every detail of my life, but I assure you that I am going to complete this project.
Speaking about the project......
That is not a fire extinguisher - I don't really know what it is. It looks like three oil canisters run in series or just stacked up on top of each other. The guy we got this from didn't know much about it. He is a musclecar guy - he didn't know the year or make of the truck and he claimed that it used to be either a service truck or a city-maintanence vehicle. The brackets look like they wear the factory color - of course it's hard to be sure of that....

Great to see something like this happen to a guy who's been down for an extented period of time. Goin back to school will be a positive mark for the resume later. Nice cab. I loved to offer to buy buy it, but my spring/summer mirror's your's.

ah, I see it now, the gaps between each tank thing looked like straps around a fire extinguisher.
I know where you live. Is it locked up? Shit man i have been looking for something like that for when the 48 goes to get paint. Don't tell me it was in town either. Great score!

Hey Broman, nice item. Can I have a few things off of it for my 34? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Well it's kind of a long story, probably best told in person, but after dad painted that 64 Impala with the metalflake roof and the scallops.....he was given an engine as part of the payment. That engine is a semi-desireable, well build Pontiac 400. The engine has had every Poncho trick in the book done to it - and someone who knew about that engine heard through the grape-vine that we were looking for a Hot-Rod project. Long story short, we swapped the engine for this truck body and some parts.
I'd tell you who gaspumps, but then my source would be more upset than I would...and he'd kill you. He'd rather remain nameless.
Dad is just getting back into Kirk Hogan's Challenger within the next week or so and he finished the Nova this weekend, so it's up for sale. Kirk's car will last well into the Thanksgiving Holiday. After that he'll probably be rebuilding his own Camaro (the 'vert on the side of the garage). He's getting anxious to get things done. If the Nova pays off well enough, I might be back on his payroll...**crosses his fingers**

Broman...the welded-in firewall says it's a 33 or 34. The 33 cabs had the body character lines carried around the cab corners and across the back of the cab, below the rear window....34 cabs had the same thing, only with a fat roll just above the other character lines, just below the back window...
Looks great! A lot nicer than my 33 cab for the Rocky 33.
A 33-34 pickup or passenger car frame will work with it.

There is an irony here, I really want to put a Pontiac engine in this truck......
Rocky,
Thanks - we had assumed that is was a 32. Dad saw screws popped up all the way around the edge of the firewall, but later we noticed that it was welded. The screws must have been there to hold weather-strip or something. The only thing I really knew was that it wasn't a Model A...
BTW - as soon as I set my eyes on this cab I got a picture of your truck in my head - I would love for this thing to come off like yours. I'll try not to cookie-cut your truck, but I do want it to be similar.
How much chop/channel in yours? Sorry to ask, I'm sure you get sick of answering questions like that, but damn it's cool. Any other details you'd like to spit would be sweii. I have never had to pay attention to this model before so as much as I thought I knew before I feel like a beginner now....

Now I'm thinking 34....
Kinda surreal that the best times I had in a hotrod came in the 33 (BTW, I titled it as a 34 just to fuck with folk).
Broman, sounds like you have a plan. Very cool. hope to see ya on the road in a while.

Tman,
Thanks. I HAVE had a bad year so far, and things don't look good for the not-too-distant future. But seeing this thing get a steady dose of work will fill my heart with hope. I know it won't come together fast. I still need a frame and a BUNCH of expensive parts, but damn it I am working on getting everthing back to normal....
....and it's not like I am jumping into this project without a plan. I have always WANTED one of these, but I would never have thought it would come this way, and as soon as this.
The best thing that comes out of this....I have a good excuse to be on the HAMB again!!!! THe Buick hasn't needed anything in quite a while and I was running out reasons to ask any GOOD questions. Now I have a ton!!!!

BTW the fire extinguisher thing with the 3 stacked pots are probably old kerosene road flares. If you take them apart you will see for sure. Might even be worth a couple bucks to some one restoring a commercial vehicle.

Willowbilly,
Thanks. That's a good lead. We had no clue what it could have been. That makes good sense though - so that's kinda cool. If I need the dough I might sell it. Otherwise I'll stay there. I like to be different.
