I want to make a good solid way to mount my body to the frame. I dont like the looks of the splined,tap-in style nutserts, I want something that I can tap in and weld around so I know it`s there to stay.

I havent looked at the local hardware and fastener stores yet (they`re not exactly right around the corner), are there any that carry such a thing..if not I`ll just make them.

Thanks-Tony

Maybe take some round stock, drill the frame to slide the stock into, weld around, cutoff excess and finally drill and tap?

I do this often at work, but usually tap the pieces first. For a 3/8" bolt we use 7/8" round stock.

I dont have any taps, I need to buy some but not this week....I`m broke bitch! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I`ll probably just take some deep nut`s that I have and grind them down until they`re round on one end, then leave a little of the hex sticking out to weld around....just sounds like a pain!

Try McMaster Carr web page (http://www.mcmaster.com/)

Look under fastening, nuts, then weld nuts.

Got some 3/8 nuts and some all thread? 60's style posted how he did his a while back. I got a few weld nuts from Visor when we secured the cowl area down, he'll have to tell ya where he got them I cant remember.

I have not tried it yet but have an idea. I want to use the flange nuts like come with muffler clamps. The flange gives you somethong to weld on.

Just got done with about 20 Rivnuts (compression nuts) on the touring. 3 of them didnt hold!!!! DOH! I would go with weld in bungs next time around.

I guess I am cheap....I just weld nuts or bolts on things...

I need to make new swaybar mounts fo rmy car so I just torched out the what was left of the old broken ones and then took a length of strap and drilled holes in it...inserted some bolts and weled them on teh back side that would sit inside my frame rail (unibody)

Try some caged nuts. Ford used them to hold on the fenders of his 30's -40's cars. One place that has them is Bob Drake. I weld them inside the channel under the body mount holes. The nuts 'float" so they don't have to be in exact position. Grind a taper on the first 2-3 threads and they will center themselves and thread right in.

I usually use "Unistrut" nuts available at any electrical wholesaler or factory supply outfit. Some have a spring welded to them, which you can break off or you can get them without the spring. They are recangular and that lets you get more weld on the them without getting too close to the threads. Be careful though - most are galvanized so wear some breathing protection. You like'em!
