How would it look if I chopped the top of my Comet off? From the windshield to the bottom of the glass on the back? I live in california (in the fuckin desert) so it shouldn't be too bad to have a good weather only car.
Here are a couple perspective pics.

Don't really want to stomp all over your idea but...
There will be some holes on the tops of the doors and the top front of the rear quarters where the posts used to be. There will be long holes where the C pillars will be cut off. The raw edge of the windshield header will be a ...raw edge. The doors won't shut right because a lot of the structure of the car comes from the top.
Other than that it will look like a factory Comet convertible.
Why not find a Comet conv't body and start with it?

I don't mean to disrespect you in any way, as I am new here aswell, but why don't you just build the car the way you want to? If you want to do whatever you had in mind the first time, and YOU will be happy with what you're doing, then build it that way. If you want to build a car that you don't like as much, but want everyone else to like, then use the very good (in my opinion) ideas of all the other people who have given their input, and build it the way they like it.

Nah this one is ok for stompin. I just wanted to throw that out there to see what the general consensus is. I'm sure I could fix all of the stuff you mentioned. Not real keen on the idea of goin topless anyway I just got to thinkin about what I could do with her.
Not tryin to post bullshit posts. I do need ideas though.
Just out of curiosity can some of you guys tell me how much time/money you put into your rods when they were "completed?"
Thanks
Too much money and the're never completed..no joke.

Thanks for the replies guys. Especially you 53... thing is is that I will eventually go with my own plan but some influential ideas wont hurt I dont think. I'm not your typical guy on the street and my car wont be either.
I appreciate your help truely. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Mercman thanks for that post man, I tried to photoshop it a bit but I suck at it. I dont think it would look so weird if you didnt see the pillar through the windshield and could see the other fin. Yeah probably another bad idea.
Now if I could make it so I could put the ht back on for bad weather that would be killer... lotsa $$
damn,
that would one fucking awsome sleeper!
go back to you original list and shit can everything but the 351,
do the install, all stock and do a build up progresively from there,
think performance!
not some stupid fucking wanna be imature crap!
you have a cool car

Ditch the C4? And the 8"? Hmmm... what would be better? A T-5 and a 9"? Maybe. Yeah man sleeper's not a bad idea since the thing is so lite. I remember the time I pulled up next to a camaro in Vegas that just shook the cars 2 lanes away... camaro maybe not the best sleeper but a 9 sec mo-fo on the street works for me. Scary stuff.

I have no doubt about that.

shave it a bit...slam it to the ground a lot...
do whatever makes you happy with how it looks...some flat black paint...paint the wheels gloss black ...whatever.
Then drive it and Build something THAT IS A HOT ROD/KUSTOM.
Thats's what i've done...Just finishing my daily driver this week so i can build something truely cool...
Cheers.

p.s Just b/c your comet will probably never be considered a HOTRODDED/KUSTOM car around Here, dosent make it any less valid...Just don't expect a lot of help on a traditional Message Board...cos it aint trad.

Yes, if you cut the roof off this car, it will fold together and you won't be able to open the doors, not to mention that it will ride like junk until the unibody cracks.
It would be a major undertaking for even an experienced metalman to properly finish this car as a convertible. With your experience, it will never get finished and it will fall apart.
Do yourself a favor and start to pick up some early/mid-60s Car Craft type magazines and research some stylistic modifications that guy were doing back then. Since this is a tradiational board, that's the suggestion that anyone should give here.
Your excitement is encouraging. Unbridled, it can ruin a nice car though. I would kick back and absorb some of the suggestions here before tearing into anything. Too many people start projects that they abort soon after.

Instead of me continually slamming your posts (it's too easy http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif), I thought I'd try to be helpful. Ditch all the cornball skulls and coffins and build something that won't look stupid to you a year later.
As others have said, follow the custom mantra:
slam it and shave it.
Those rear cateye taillights already look custom. Just clean off all that bauble that the factory tacked on.
If you do your homework, you'll find that mohair was NOT cool in the 60s, and most kids dreamed about a white tuck and roll vinyl interior. A little flake in the paint will make you happy when the sun shines. For an inexpensive wheel solution, just paint the steelies body color and run chrome acorn nuts and trim rings. If you paint the wheels red, we will beat you silly.
Observe and meditate, young one ...

Anyone like blue dots? What years are those acceptable to use on? Learning more everytime I log in. Thanks guys.

I think I'll give another voice to supporting the hot rod idea. Remember that a Falcon (and therefore the Comet) is a lot like an early Mustang. Sticking a dual-quad 289, four-speed and a positraction 9-inch would be a great way to build a sleeper hot rod. Pick your favorite factory color scheme, do a five lug conversion (disc brakes while you're at it) and go eat some late model Mustangs and ricers.

I wouldn't use blue dots on those taillights. They're pretty cool the way they sit... just my oppinion.

Haring, dunno if you saved that pic but if you did could you make it black? It looks sweet like that but I really want the car to be black. Btw about shaving the gas cap, I found a mod to place the filler neck in the trunk, that pic looks really clean. Might consider that, thanks.

It's fairly difficult in Photoshop to flip the color in a hurry and make it look good. I'm actually working, so I don't have time. But I was just trying to get the ball rolling.
The gas filler mod looks cool, but to do it right, you should also make a rear firwall between the trunk and back seat, just in case your cap leaks and the trunk explodes. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif A rear-end collision will send a fireball rolling through the car even on a stock Falcon/Comet/Mustang, and that ain't cool.
Don't use bluedots.
Spend the money right now and get yourself a subscription to the Rodders Journal, then get on eBay and visit swap meets to pick up the restyling mags from the 60s. Any way you decide to go, it's good to have reference.

Looks good haring, I'd probably try and shitcan the side chrome and just make a nice peak on the fin tops. Maybe get rid of the rear end of that side cove where it turns down. Blend it in. Put white tuck & roll in it. That car just wants to be smooooooooth.
**DONOTDELETE**
10-14-2003, 12:54 PM
No problem haring. I understand.
Smokein: I had looked at what it would take to get rid of the side chrome, when I bought the car. It has a seem that runs the length of the rear quarter under the cap. My buddy offered to help me shave the molding will take a fair amount of welding and sanding to get rid of it but I think I had already decided to do so. I like the side cove though. I was just outside lookin at it and smooth looks like the way to go.
Damn I wish I had some local friends that could help with this car cause as you know I really dont know what I'm doing here http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
Give me a 5.0 Mustang and I know what to do with it for sure but with this poor car... well I'm just glad I came here.

You've come to the right place for guidance. Thank God you're not cutting the top off that sweet car.
I agree, no blue dots. If you live in the desert, do you REALLY want a dark colored car?? That peachy (?) one looks cool.

Yeah I want it black. I could get a vintage air kit I guess. The car does look kinda pink huh... It's actually an off white color.

if the paint is in decent condition, why PRIMER it??
im with 60s style... but my twist would be to 1) lower it 2) drive it 3) get a beefy rearend, then tranny, all the while figuring out how to shoehorn a big block into it. DONE.
