I just got my Model A on the road, I have a 40 ford rear
banjo, which is supposed to have 3:78 ratio based on
the # stamped on the housing.

Anyhow I would like to go faster than I am now at high speed.
it launches from a stop great, but top speed is about
60 mph, or at least that is as high as I want to wind the
motor.

I have heard about the 3:54 gears as a stock option, but
I also heard there is a 3:25 ratio being made, I just
don't know where to find them.

so if anyone knows where I can find some
and if anyone has more experience with what has worked for
them any advise would be appreciated.

I built the car real old timey, with a 39 tranny and flathead and banjo, I would like to keep it that way, just
be able to drive a little faster.

I built this car in a couple of months so it is a little
rough.

Speedway Motors sells a 3:54 gear, and I think Hot Rod and Custom Supply also carries them. Not sure about where to get a 3:25.

There's a guy up here who claims that '47 Ford passenger cars came with a 3.54 gear stock. I have no proof of that. The ring and pinion numbers are stamped on the banjo on the underside just behind where the torque tube bolts on.

But you knew that..... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

3:54 gears will be easy to find new. Most of the restoration parts houses stock them. I purchased a set from MACS Auto Parts (http://www.macsautoparts.com) .
They are a bit pricey...prolly $450, but makes an amaizing difference at highway speeds. I can cruise 70-75 comfortably and can reach 80 or so to pass with out worry. Make sure you are not running Zephyr tranny gears. That would be a miserable combo....I know this from experience.
Also, there were only a few fords that came with this gearset in the rear, but many more mercs....especially the '46-48s.
3:25 are available for model A and 32 rears, but I have not seen a set for the later rears.

Not to hijack this post but does anyone offer these gears for a open drive truck banjo?

I knew about the 3:54 ratio, I can get them from
speedway for about $300.

I talked to someone today who said that getz used to
make the 3:25 but they are no longer available, but he
has been wrong about stuff before

Duece------ the ring and pinion are the same whether or
not it is open drive, from what I understand.

thanks for all the help guys

Sorry Red, but there is a major difference between the open and closed tailshaft pinions.

The closed is splined. either 6 or 10, and no thread - the open is tapered, with a keyway slot to hold the tailshaft yolk in place, and a thread to screw on the retaining nut to stop it from coming off.

They came in either 3.78, 4.11 and (I think) 4.44 ratios.

Cheers
