View Full Version : How to mount an engine on a stand?

Yeah, I'm new at this.

I'm assuming I can mount the stand to the same bolt holes that the transmission mounts to. Right? I'm talking my 302 here.

The only real question I have is what should I use for bolts... the mounting arms have a 3 inch deep pocket for the bolt, which seems odd to me. Can anybody clue me in?

Thanks,

Use 4" grade 5 bolts with several flat washers. I like to bolt the head to the back of the engine first and then use a chainhoist, cherry picker or what ever to raise it... slide the head into the stand and let the engine down carefully.. I leave the chain hoist in place but with no weight on it and bounce the engine up and down on the stand to see if it will take the weight of the engine ok.

The reason for the 3" pockets is so there is room for the flexplate or flywheel that protrudes from the back of your motor. I like to bolt the part of the stand with the pockets onto the motor first, the motor sitting on the ground with the cherry picker holding it stable. Then raise the motor, slide the stand (the foot and post part) onto the part on the motor.

I prefer to remove the whole rotating head from the stand and bolt it to the back of the engine while the engine is still on the floor....keeping the legs as far apart as is reasonable with the pivot pin on the head as close to the C.G. of the engine as possible (guesswork here). Then I lift the engine with the hoist and slide the pivot pin into the stand's frame. After that I lock it down with the pinch bolt.

wow, 3 guys have mentioned bolting the mounting plate to the block, and then sliding the stand back together. Ive never thought of that before, but its a great idea. Usually when I put an engine on a stand I prefer to have 2 people, it helps to have one move the motor and another thread the bolts. Your way would be much easier, thanks alot!

Thanks for the advice guys. I put the motor on when on the hoist, with the stand assembled. I just had all of the bolts really loose and tightened the engine to the stand. I tightened the outside bolts to the engine, then tightened the inside bolts for the stand.

Worked great.

I'll be posting my photos soon http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
