My name is John, I'm a junior in highschool in delafield wisconsin. Right now My car is a 68 Cadillac calais, and my beater is an 87 dodge diplomat with 200,000 on it. I've been getting into hot rods lately, mainly "rat rods." Seeing BobBleed's stuff down the street from me has really gotten me motivated to build something for myself. That along with going to alot of the shows in the area, and seeing ones for sale online. Also, I scored a massive pile of late 50's early 60's hot rod and custom magazines, so I guess that has added to the passon too. I like the "mecanicalness of them. The fact that everythign is out in the open, and that there isnt anything that isnt there to make it go fast, or stop fast. I guess I am looking to find myself something that I can put all my focus and energy into, and have the end result be tangable and something that I can be proud of, and that opther people can enjoy. I'm hoping that through being a member of this board, I can hopefully find myself a project, and benifit from all the experiance you guys as a whole have aquired through building your own customs. So yeah, me in a nutshell. I hope to learn alot and make some cool friends through this.

John

Welcome JC. It wasn't so long ago I was a high schooler myself (Junior in college now). Late fifties hot rod mags are a great place to look for inspiration. If you're headed to college money may get tight soon, but it doesn't mean you can't still screw around with cars. That Caddy sounds like a good cruiser (or, to my thinking, parts car!) just don't try to make it fifties style, no matter how much you may like it. It'll just look silly. Plenty of time to research and gather materials, though! Welcome aboard.

Wanna learn how to build tough hot rods, go down to Bleeds place and ask him if you can push the broom around and take out the trash. Being around a guy that puts together cars like that on a daily basis will teach you more than any book, magazine, video or website could.

Oh, and welcome to the HAMB.

Just one thing you forgot in there. Money. I put almost All of my money into my rod. I sacrifice alot of stuff for it but it feels good to be the only 16 year old in the area building a hot rod.

Good luck man.

hey welcome aboard.

i just might be able to help you if your serious about finding a hot rod body, im picking up some private stash of old tin fairly soon, and if bob says your cool... your cool, i think... maybe... if he were a cheater then I would know for sure... but hes not. haha...

too bad your classifieds post got butchered up, alot of people get pretty uptight on this board sometimes you just gotta sift thru the bullshit and take what you need... cool to see you did a proper intro... maybe ill meet ya one of my trips thru town.

Welcome from a fellow newbie! Just hang out and check the classifieds and e-bay. If you wait for the right deals, you can get going fairly inexpensively. I have most of the "big" parts together now to build a model A, and I'm at just over a grand out-of-pocket. If I stick an SBF in there, I think I can be on the road for around 3K (I have a bunch-o-stuff left over from various 5-liter projects, so I have a bit of a head-start.) My goal is to get it on the road, and then fancy it up with a cool multicarb setup and such as time and $$$ allow. I have a Desoto Hemi sitting on a stand, but it looks like the rebuild kit and a cool intake setup for it will cost me more than the whole rest of the car! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Have fun!

john,

after seeing that you asked a very logical question about z-ing a frame it looks to me like you're here to learn something and not to just fill in a couple of evenings playing on a keyboard. that's the kind of thing us older fellas like to see in the younger set. therefore welcome to the hamb. you've certainly come to the right place. if you keep your ears/eyes open around here you can get the education of a lifetime from many lifetimes of experience and all it'll cost you is the time to soak it up. there's not a classroom in the world where you can learn the stuff you'll see here. may i recommend that you cut/paste threads that interest you into word files and keep them. it'll turn into an instruction book that you just can't get anywhere else.

and, yeah, if bleed will let you hang out at his place you'll see and learn a bunch of stuff.

welcome.

Welcome to the HAMB! You are lucky to have a mentor close to home. I am 55 yrs old been fooling with cars since I was 13 and I learn something here every day. You just gotta sort thru the BS and ignore the occasional stupidity that sometimes pops up. Good luck with your cars. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
