I need to replace the wood in the bed of my 56, but money is tight. Walnut or oak would be cool, but what are some other options that would hold up well?

I had a friend that had some random luck calling guys that do hardwood floors. After a few calls he found someone with some 6x1 walnut boards left over from a job. he picked em up for a song. It took him over a month but he kept trying. Good luck.

I got Pecan for the '53, it cost me a dollar a running foot rough cut. Ends up being about 60 or 70 dollars if I recall. Watch the class ads for someone selling hardwood in your area that's how I found mine.

I've used 1/8 x 2 flatbar in a pinch. if you have access to a bead roller you can make 'em out of tin (say 20 gauge).

I always wanted to find a section of a bowling alley complete with gutters for my old 50 chev. p/u. A lot harder to locate than you might expect. Although I might be in the market in this old German bowling alley in a town outside of San Antonio, now that truck is long and gone http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I used treated wood from home depot more than 23 years ago. Its showing its age, but is still usable and it has always been outside.

I was toying with the idea of Yella wood, but not too sure yet.

Thanks guys. Any one else have any ideas?

On my '56 Chevy pu I got a piece of 4x8 oak laminated plywood... Bolted it in, and then bolted each one of the metal straps onto it... looked just like an oak kit for a fraction of the cost!

hell fish, I have also toyed with the idea of using Home depot stuff. They have different colored wood stains, you could use before sealing the wood. (Such as a tint to match or complement the color of your truck.) You know, a subtle tint, not a bright painted wood?

Didn't Sorchik do something like using luan ply in that gray truck of his? I rmember seeing it in Rodder's Digest thinking, "that's dumb", but then saw it in person and thought, "that's cool!" He had sealed it with some kind of glossy sealer (polyurethane?), but it had some pearl in it.

I guess it's be like SamIyam's setup 'cept he didn't put the strips back in?
