Look real closely at the tag right near where the nut/washer are - you sure there's not another number in front? I've never seen a tag like that. (but that doesn't mean anything!)

Spin it and find out.
If it's an "open" differential... have someone hold one axle... you spin the pinion and when the axle goes one half a revolution, you have your number:1
If it is a locked rear end and you can't hold one end from turning... count the pinion revolutions and when BOTH axles make ONE revolution... you have your ratio.

Yeah - often the first numbers in both the top & bottom lines are obscured by the nut. Check real close to see...
The ratio is the first three digits of the bottom number - yours looks to be a digit shy of a full tag - that's why I thought you should look closely where the nut might have rubbed it off.
BUT that would make it x.89:1 - don't think 3.89:1 was a factory ratio - 3.91:1 was the factory ratio for most that I'm aware of - 3.89:1 is aftermarket & that wouldn't be stamped (obviously), so maybe you do have a goofy tag that doesn't follow the convention...
Sam's way works real well though! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
