I know as I type this it's going to come out wrong and I'll be called a numbnuts, etc. - but for a $30,000+ motor that one in particular sure looks cheap & souless. I know it's completely rediculous but I can't help it. But yeah, if I had the cash I'd buy it.

Very cool, except for those A/N fittings and the alternator/pulley set up, that looks like crap.

Time to go look at that Ardun issue of HRM--the fourth issue in the flathead building series in 1956--see what they're supposed to look like...

Where's Gooch? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

But seriously that's a nice collection of parts but for me somehow on an engine, it just doesn't work. I know all about the history and all that but if you look at any other "Collectable" from the 50's, no one is paying this kinda cash for stuff. The fact that it's rare or has history just doesn't explain it. At least not to me.

I think I'd buy the heads if I had the cash, or the injection, or the mag, etc. But even if I had the cash to burn I wouldn't buy the whole motor. I can't exactly explain why... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Bruce Lancaster

well, repro Arduns are way over $20 grand, early fuel injection is worth a lot and costs a lot to refurbish, a high quality/fancy parts build of the basic engine assembly is another pile of thousand dollar bills, the heads are supposed to be NOS original, and of course even new heads would cost lots in machine work and parts because many original Ardun valvetrain parts aren't really useable. Plus the world has been whipped into a lather by the recent Rodder's Journal article...that much money sounds quite reasonable if you look at what it would take to get an Ardun running any possible way short of finding a perfect fossil in a junkyard...
You can't play with any sort of early rodding hardware anymore without noticing that the world around us has gone mad.
We'll probably be a bit better off when the current nostalgia fad moves on, but there will still be too many of us, some with too much money, chasing too few early goodies.

"But even if I had the cash to burn I wouldn't buy the whole motor. I can't exactly explain why... "

I have the same feeling about many modern attempts to build perfect forties or fifties rods--a LOT of them are done by well heeled collectors who attempt to assemble EVERY early rodding icon part they have ever heard of into one car--typically Ardun, SCOT, DuVall, wire wheels, quickchange, Harmon Collins, and everything else that causes a flathead riot on Ebay in one heap, leading to a car that's just as inapproprite as the modern streetrods that attempt to incorporate all known fads into one '48 Chevy truck with roadster conversion-pro street-backwards doors-$10,000 stereo-blower-air conditioning and so on. Bolting the entire contents of a museum together does not produce a successful car.

All I can think of is, thanks a lot Craig Jackson (speed channel for showing it) e bay and antiques road show. They have all done a good job of locking the little / low buck guy totally out of the ballpark. Swap meet prices have gotten ridicules. And attendance is way down. Car prices are totally out of control. Im just glad I collected a few things before.
The ardun heads I saw at the swap meet 2 years ago for 5000 look cheap now. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I've had that thought lots of times and that's one aspect of it for me. But from a purely logical standpoint, your return on investment is bound to be lower if you buy all that stuff at once.

Think about it... Has anybody ever gotten back what they put into a really high end build on a motor when they sell the car? I didn't.

So if you run through the numbers... 35K for the motor, 10 to 20K for a 33 Coupe (probably), at least 10K on paint, and at least 5K for interior, plus all the little chingas that go into building a high-end Traditional rod, and you're probably pushing 80k in the build at the very least.

So now you go to sell the car...

Unless you're putting that motor back in the Emil Dietrick car and restoring it, you're probably not going to get much more than 60K for the car if you sell it.

Now think if you'd just used a set of Ardun repops and some stroms or even repopped injection...

You might actually have made a few grand on the back end. Not much but something, and I'd wagor that the guy that buys that motor, already has 80K in his car to start. But that's just a guess.

Then there's the fact that I would never buy a "complete" engine off of Ebay and expect it to be built as good as I would have built it. I didn't read any garuntees on the block etc...

hehe... i see the sarcasm, this nostalgic trend has been a steady climb.

in the late 80s/early 90s a friend and i use to sit and gawk at our dads old photos from the 40s/50s, hot rod mags from the 50s/60s etc. but our little minds and pocket books couldnt imagine where we would start building one of these, combine this with MIA fathers, MIA from high school and only the 2 of us to learn from each other, a hot rod wasnt going to happen.

so we turned to muscle cars which were plentiful, running, and with quite a few paychecks in the bank could be ours.

styling ques from mothballed magazines and the "do it yourself mentality" were our guides.

i bet there are hundreds of people like me and my friend out there, we're slightly more mature, skilled, and making some cash, building up a hotrod emulating those from our fathers youth is now realistic. id wager this can be a contributing factor to the price hikes some of you old timers see with parts 40yrs and older.

Here's my imperfect fossil found in a backyard.I agree there's a trend to build cars that would have been the ultimate in say 1952 but of course very few were ever this way with all the period bells and whistles. That said I've been lucky finding some pieces and will incorporate them in my 32 when I finish it.

ahhhhh, its all clear to me now. Bob Joehnck is a trip. He had everything to do with the so-cal coupe and yet no one ever says anything about it, he did major R&D for everyone on the planet and yet still works alone in the back of his shop here in Santa Barbara. He is a hotrod God. He is in the Land Speed Hall of Fame for a reason. A funny guy and a true master.

Jesse Alexander, the famous sports car photogropher, just wrote a huge article about him and included some very cool pictures durring Joehnck's Corvette years for the official Corvette magazine. Bob was very proud of it and when I was talking about the progress I was making on the 32 he shoved a few copies under my arm.

He still thinks I am an idiot for restoring an old car but never tells me to go away when I stop by. I walk right into all his jokes and I get a kick out of him making fun of me. It's a little game we play and I always let the old man win. He has no idea of the ammount of respect I have for him. I cant wait to hit the salt next year with him in his old coupe. And I will!

Yep;they're arduns alright matched heads number 214&215 complete with a Hilborn set-up pulled out an ex-racers backyard near Mobile Alabama back in '97.It also came with the block which had a 3/8 stroker,Wilcap main caps and a Kong distributer. He raced it back in the late fifties in a modified. He told me he bought all the parts from C-T in California. Here's another shot of the heads in my chassis.

Greg;I originally bought the motor for $1500.00[told the story in my intro],but piecing it together has been expensive for a working stiff.I bought a Ken Austin blower intake for 750.00;new lifters from Don Ferguson for 450.00;a set of C.A.T. h-beam rods for 475.00.So you can see it's not a cheap deal.I hope to have it running with all good pieces for under $10,000.Might seem expensive to some;cheap to others but it's my holy grail and I intend to drive the piss out of it.
