The Vortecs are the best bang-for-the-buck for your type of project. You may already know, but you will have to also change-over to a Vortec style intake manifold.

I would do the vortec swap if you're looking for the best bang for your buck. It will increase your HP and your fuel efficiency. I bolted a set of rebuilt 305 heads onto my 350. It upped the compression a bit and gives you gobs of low end torque. I still have to take it for a ride out on the highway to see what she has for top end, but from my research on this kind of set up, the engine will peak at 5000-5500 RPM's. But so far, after 600 miles on the rebuilt engine. I'm happy with the way it runs

the Vortecs are great...but...if you've got some sparechange...look into Fast Burns..they are GMs aluminum Vortec performance head, and they work great out of the box with the matching alum 4-barrel intake (also from GM). I have this top end on mt daily driver wagon, and I'm relly happy with them. Add a little cam (about .500-inch lift and about 280 duration) and you'll have a thumper.

The heads go for about 1000/pr. at the Chevy dealer.

and if you want to be simple and go buy some bolt ons, id suggest something newer than 1986. These have 4 bolts going down the center of the valve covers to fasten them, and your 77? valve covers wont work. 86-95 will have the center bolt covers, but you will be able to use your stock 1977 intake manifold I believe. 96 through current are the vortec style, and that will require a special intake manifold that I believe fastens straight downward. I hope this helps. I just turned 18 and I know that obviously you dont start out with a car that defines coolness, and personally I dont like a 77 imp or caprice, and if you dont really have your heart set on it id save the money and drive the 77 while you build something you would really like with the money you saved not updating the daily driver. If a 77 caprice is what you want than good for you, youve already got a great start and start building that motor up.

In case you haven't noticed, 3/4 of the cars on this board aren't traditional rods or customs. It's the interest in trad rods and customs and the interest in learning to do it yourself or with friends that holds us together. Not the cars we drive. Today, we accept 4 doors and longroofs into our ranks because there just aren't that many roadsters and 30's coupe bodys laying in the neighbor's yard for free anymore. Besides, most have families now. We aren't fresh out of high school anymore. 49-51 2 door mercs are getting hard to find too.
Guys are customizing and hopping up 60's and even early 70's cars now because that's what's out there. I love it when some know it all asshole in a 59 4 door station wagon with a mexican blanket covering his broken seat springs tells me my Chevelle isn't a traditional rod. But he's gotta rag me locally, because his crapped out grandmother's car won't go fast enough to run on the freeway to the next town. Hasn't so much as changed the plugs in that POS 4 door wagon since his grandmother gave it to him 20 years ago. He's a traditional rodder and I'm not! Yea, right. Guys who show up in SUVs seem to know it all too. I don't care, I like lots of different cars. To put a positive spin on this thread, HR2H is probley the finest example I could ever choose of NOT judging a book by it's cover, ie, a person by his looks, (or car or clothing or job or amount of money he has, etc.) Steve is one of the smartest, nicest, kindest, personable persons I know. When I first laid eyes on him I was kinda taken back. I don't normally hang in circles where tats and bodypiercings are common. After an afternoon of chatting and getting to know him I was hooked for life and consider him a true friend. He graduated from UofM? A fact I didn't know (cuz he doesn't shove his accomplishment down others thoats) BUT it does not surprise me in the least. A HUGE accomplishment and probley one of the many reasons his own business is so successful.

What performance gains might I expect?
I'm willing to sell my wife's '96 Honda Accord station wagon to the first Asian dude that steps up with $3000, aw fuck, I don't care what race they are. The hubcaps have some road rash but they might clean up.
I like '77 Impalas more than '04 Impalas but not as much as '59s.
