View Full Version : A '36 reborn

So Friday night I went back home to work on my car. JonJon and I are talking about the chances of my '36 actually making the Pileup... Not impossible, but with the way things have gone on this "rebuild" not terribly probable either. So we're looking at Dad's '36 3 window which just had the rear pan put back in and I say "hmmm... How long would it take us to put Dad's car back together?" He says not nearly as long as yours. So Saturday we tore into it and long story short, I drove it around the block on Sunday. Still needs the lights wired up and a few other odds and ends. So if all goes well this week, I am going back home this coming weekend and driving it back up. Dad is cool with it too. Otherwise, it would have just gone back in the barn. This was it's first time being driveable in 7 years. Dad got screwed by a couple different body shops. Long depressing story...

My wheels and tires look fucking bad ass on this thing. Hopefully we can convince Dad to buy some whites for it. When I give it back, it may become a tail dragger. The skirts have been painted already. They're pushing hard for them to put the spare tire back on. I'm pushing back equally hard to leave it OFF until I give it back!! I filled the holes for my spare tire.

I have more pics here. The rotor pics belong to my other thread trying to figure out what the hell the rotors are off of.

Incidently, we got the brake pedal/floor/travel issue resolved on my '36 and looks like it will stop pretty well (according to our jackstand running test). As soon as the column goes in, I think we can take it for a spin around the block.

No we didn't chop it. The previous owner, Eric Swanson did it in the late 80s I think. He did a really nice job. I sure wish he hadn't filled the cowl vent though. Dad bought it in '92 I believe. Dad just bought a complete original interior from a guy that was street rodding a stocker, and we plan on putting the door panels and orginal seat in and taking out the bucket seats.

Yeah, first my chevelle, and now Dad's coupe. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif And technically, my coupe was "driving" on the jackstands. Just no steering yet. It sounds wicked. Dad's coupe will scoot... my coupe will annihilate it. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

If you missed the link, here is Dad's four door. It has a 59AB motor in it. I decided this weekend to give him my dropped axle and we're going to put the original juice brakes that came off of my 5 window on the four door (Dad started street rodding it in the 80s). For those that don't know my 5 window was my Dad's first car and he converted the car to juice brakes in '64.

I live to someday own a chopped 35-36 three window like that. Your dads car has the almost perfect lines and stance down. I'd love to see it with skirts but as the spare-tire nazi says.....
"NO SPARE FOR YOU!"
Spare tires belong at home or in the trunk...
Sorry Poncho Billy...

Here are some pictures that may help determine which direction to go with your dad's car.

First one is 600-16F, 700-16R. Front is lowered about 6", rear about 1".

Here it's 600-16 all around, and the back is down 6". Running boards are level.

Same as the last one, with skirts. I think I'm gonna settle on low all around/big tires in back/no skirts.

Keeping the spare was never an option for me. If he decides to do it, though, they look neat if the spare mount is lowered a couple of inches on the deck.

That looks amazing! I have to say, I prefer the rake, but we already knew that didn't we. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif I'll print that out and show him.

You know if you start driving that 3W you will never be satisfied with the 5W. The 3W looks good, they rate very high on my want list, a 5W is not far behind. What did you do on the brake pedal broblem?

Did your Dad have the sedan last year? Remember seeing one in Leb last year at a show. That show should be coming up real soon again this year.

Well, he HAS suggested we trade once the 5 window is roadworthy again. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif He hasn't said lately if he still wants to do it. I am not sure I really want to do it either. There are certain aspects to the 3 window that I don't agree with (centerbolt 305, Mustang power booster on the firewall). Nothing that couldn't be changed, but then it would be apart again and it's been apart too long. I've spent alot of time and money making the 5 window "mine". We'll see though. He hates that I want to do this to the 5 window eventually. JonJon keeps telling him it's not his car anymore. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif I'm sure he would be fine with whatever I wanted to do to the 3 window.

On the pedal, JonJon figured out that if we rotated the pedal backward on the pivot point, it still would work properly and give us the room we needed. It stops about .5" above the floor.
